People did used to worry about metacam causing kidney issues but in all the hamsters I've had, Metacam has had no issues at all and just gives pain relief and reduces inflammation. Views have changed a bit on that. Unless a hamster has known and vet diagnosed kidney problems. Virtually all syrians start to get failing kidneys as they get older but that is not the same as kidney disease. The main thing I'm aware it's contraindicated with is Cushings disease.
A dose is just to achieve pain relief at the correct amount. A lesser dose won't do that unfortunately. It's like only taking one paracetamol tablet instead of two - it doesn't do the job.
They are difficult decisions, and personal choice, but the main reason for Metacam is to keep them comfortable in old age. They hide pain so well.
I hope Socks gets over his trip to the vets - sorry it was stressful for him.
