My little companion, Hammy

Assume you know they're not recommended as safe to use these days :-) But maybe you just use it as a taxi - I used to do that :-) I did used to have a rat ball for our syrian many years ago now and he seemed quite happy with it, but the general consensus now is they are too risky - nails and feet can get trapped in the slots, and more.

When she is in a climbing mood, she loves having her belly tickled through the bars. It doesn't bother her at all.

I'll be doing my hammys first full cage clean this week. Does anyone have any ideas how to get her out without stressing her too much? Bearing in mind she has been handled yet.

Could you clean half the cage and let her be in the other half? Having only half a cage clean would be less stressful for her.

Or perhaps a tunnel or her hamster ball could be used as a taxi to pop her into her carrier.

Yes that would be much better - we usually recommend “partial “ cage cleans anyway - rather than all at once. People with very deep bedding tend to do 1/3 cage cleans. A half cage clean is a good option - and just do the substrate - not any other cage items at the same time. Eg do the wheel a different week again.

This article has some cage cleaning tips

I managed to give Hammy some food from my hand in her cage this morning. Got a little nip off her for my efforts. Early on when I changed the water in her bottle, she was having a chew in her favourite corner. When I came back into the room, she was sat near where her water bottle goes so patiently, that the minute I put the nozzle through the bars, she immediately started drinking while I fastened it to the cage.

She is so sweet in that first photo :-)

What a sweetie. Those little white paws ...

How lovely that she was waiting for her water and drank as soon as you put the spout through the bars. She is getting tamer all the time.

Yes, she is a real cutie. You can see why they call them teddy bears. I look forward to the day I can handle her and not get bitten.
