Good morning everyone, I have very good news and very bad, first I'll give the bad news we lost Henry on Friday he passed peacefully in his sleep, which is what we all pray for. He would have been 16 this year and had a wonderful life. We decided to stick to our plan and the good news is that we have our Syrian male hamster! Our daughter Sarah came to stay to give support with losing Henry and we all decided to stick to the original plan. He is the most perfect little chap and I'm looking forward to getting to know him . He's very active and friendly I'll put a picture on once I get one. Obviously I'm trying not too fuss and let him settle in, although that's very hard, with all the heartache and sadness he has definitely been a tonic. I haven't fully commited to a name yet as I haven't had him a day yet but Ted or Teddy keeps coming to mind. We'll see, I look forward to getting you a picture soon.Ness.

Oh dear, I am so sorry for your loss. I have just lost my cat after 14 years this year, so I know how upset you all are 🥲 I also decided to get a little hamster and I must say it does help over the sadness. I am looking forward to seeing your little friend and sending warm hugs of support over your loss. 🌺🌺

I've refreshed his water this morning, should I change his food or would it be better to leave it
They gave me the food he had at the time so that it was familiar for him. I don't want to cause him any distress? Ness

I am so sorry about Henry 🫂. And lovely news that you have your hammy. I am sure he will bring you joy. I would keep the food you were given initially, and gradually change it over in a couple of weeks, so he adjusts :-) It is better to be a bit cautious with changes of diet with baby hamsters.

Just read about Henry. So sorry. It's so hard when a pet passes. Great news you got yr hammy , and yr doing so good , letting him settle in first. I am sure he will help to ease the pain of losing Henry. Xx looking forward to the pics when you manage to get some. X

Good morning everyone, I'm being very well behaved and letting teddy settle in. We put a camera in before we got him and I'm so glad we did I can watch the recording in the morning and see what he's been up to. He's absolutely fascinated with his wheel, he must do miles. I think I'd worry about him if I didn't have the camera it was very cheap but a bonus at the moment. Patience is key I know I just didn't realise how little I had ha ha 🫣🧐 Ness

Aw that sounds great. Yes it really helps with a hamstercam when you don't see them at first. I found that particularly when I had a robo - I had to have patience for about 3 weeks there but could watch him on the nightcam :-)

Morning everyone, should I clean his toilet sand or is that wrong at this time ? I'm hovering not sure. Ness

I can’t give you an advice as I am new to being a hamster mum too. But I am sure Max will answer. I am always uncertain of doing something wrong, but gradually it’s getting better now on day 13 😅 they are so small and delicate, I am used to horses cats and dogs, but these tiny little creatures cause me grey hairs for worrying 😅

Thank you for answering 😊 I'm so glad I joined the forum. Just to feel that if you have any doubts you can ask. Ness

Can I ask what time of day is best to put out their fresh food, I've been. doing it in the morning, but finding it's just sitting there till late at night when he gets up, obviously I'm hoping to see him earlier in the day eventually but I'm not sure what to do now! Ness

Hi . Sorry it seems a bit quiet at the moment - I think it's been all the nice weather! Usual thing is to try not to disturb anything for the first two weeks while they are settling in. If it's a sand potty it's usually fine to empty it out say once a week :-) Best done while the hamster is asleep. If it's his sand bath he's peeing in, you can use a little sieve to scoop out any wet patches maybe once a week. But the sand does tend to soak it up well and reduce the odour.

Now you have your little hammy, it might be nice to start a thread for him :-) Some of us have a hamster's own thread/diary thread for updates on them, photos, and so on, that others follow :-) As he's a Syrian it would be in the Syrian hamster section. You can call it whatever you want - All about Ted, Ted's adventures etc etc. Or just Ted's thread.

I spot clean the cage at about six in the evening, he is still in bed but not in deep sleep. Sometimes he comes up to beg for a treat, but he is not the timid kind. I saw him from the first day. He groomed and inspected his cage as soon as I got him. And during the day I can see him in his corner when he’s snoozing

That bed needs to be cleaned 😳 but I have to be patient… I am detecting a small “perfume” coming from that corner….
