Oh no. Do you think he might have been dozing under the blanket? They can bite if woken - it's just an instinct. Either that or this thumb appeared uner his blanket and he thought it was a moving bug to pounce on and eat. It would be the movement probably. I don't think he was being mean - just in his own little world and a normal instinct.
I wouldn't say it's correct to say a new frightened hamster is easier to tame. It's probably more that if they are left too long they soon regress to wild habits of independence. I think the right time to start is about 2 weeks after they arrive - getting them used to out of cage time. It depends what people mean by tame as well. I see it as "hand tame" - ie when you can pick them up/handle them without them pinging and they have learned to trust that. That doesn't mean they won't still be superfast and not very cuddly!
