Hello everyone,

I just had to bury my little Chubbs this morning and I was cleaning out his cage and looking through ads for hamsters that kind of got bought for kids and the kids lost interest kind of thing as I don’t really want to promote the pet stores…. Anyhow not expecting to bring another little guy into the family right away. But, this little sweetie needed a home and well, I went and picked him up. His name is Frodo and he is around 2 years old. The lady that gave him to me had just lost her 20 year old daughter to a Fentanyl overdose and I think she was just finding everything too much and I totally get it. She was so sweet and she didn’t want to give him up to anyone who wanted him as a present for kids and I gotta respect her for that. She was over the moon when I sent her photos of the cage I have and everything :) he did come with an itty bitty cage with the usual tiny wheel and a foot drop off the top level! I think I’ll probably put it in the giveaway. So I had already Cleaned out Chubb’s cage this morning with a vinegar rinse and scrubbed and changed all the bedding so I stopped to get a bunch more and couple new toys etc etc. I did what I would normally do after a cage clean and sprinkled some of Frodo’s litter and nest material from his old cage into the new. He’s busy exploring and has already found a wonderful whimzee! Anyhow, it might seem fast for others but I have lots of time and space to offer and I think they’re just the most interesting little pets!!! I don’t think Chubb’s would have his nose too out of joint :) maybe the whimzee would right set him though!!!!!

Ooh I'm so glad you got him. That poor woman, losing her daughter 😥. It sounds like she needs to sue someone as well - Fentanyl is an anaesthetic isn't it?

Anyway I'm so glad Frodo has a lovely home with you. You're very brave as well if he's already two years old, but he could have a good few months to live, or even a year. He is absolutely gorgeous as well. The eye rings - he's a sable - or part sable. I see so many people with sables but have never managed to find one myself!

Unfortunately fentanyl is a becoming common street drug here in Canada. A lot of the time, I believe they lace cocaine and heroin with it and an addict takes it in without knowing it’s there. It’s really sad. It’s gotten so bad that they give away free naloxone kits at the pharmacy so that if you suspect an overdose, you have the kit on hand to administer.

He is a pretty cool looking little guy! So different from little Chubbs but also so
Similar. I had a couple tears when he took a little piece of banana from my hand right away- it was Chubbs absolute favourite! I do hope I get a lot of time with him. I knew he was already aged for a hamster but still, he needed a new somebody!

He looks very pleased with his spacious cage. He looks very healthy. Such sad circumstances, but the lady will be pleased that Frodo went to someone who will care for him really well. He is a handsome little hammy!

Awww thanks!!!! She’s already messaged me to see how the trip home was lol!!! I believe he’s in the process as we speak of making himself a nest under the stand that holds his food bowl :) very busy little guy! I don’t think it’ll take him too long to settle in at all!

He's lucky you got him :) It must be lovely that he is already so tame and used to people, but I can understand at the same time that can be bittersweet initially when you've only just lost Chubbs. I;'m sure time will help

Congratulations on your lovely new hamster. Lots of happy settling in vibes. So sorry that his previous owner died so young. Really sad.

I'm so sorry to hear about Chubbs, he seemed to be such a lovely little guy. It's great news however that you have managed to give another little hamster a new home, he is very lucky you found him.

So sad to read the lady you visited has lost her daughter 😢 comforting perhaps for her to know Frodo will be well cared for and loved. Looks like he’s enjoying exploring his new home, he has a very sweet face. Look forward to hearing more as he settles.

I think Chubbs had a paw in getting Frodo to you; all is in right and perfect timing :)

Such a sad story, it must be so difficult for the mom.

But that makes it all the more important the little Frodo has found a good home with you. How is he settling in?
He’s very recluse unfortunately. He really likes the deep bedding he has now so I very rarely see him :) he’s friendly though and doesn’t mind being handled at all. He won’t take any treats from my hand if I’m holding him but if he’s in his cage, he’s happy to take anything from me lol he doesn’t go wild for the food like Chubbs did but he’s just a different little guy, I guess! I’m fairly certain he’s active overnight so I think he’s healthy, just very different from little Chubbs. Maybe in the warmer summer months he’ll come out a little more, I hope so!

Socks is a lot like Frodo. I see him out and about at 3am, which can be a bit hard on the sleep, but he loves it when we do things together, mainly me watching Socks running on his wheel. If my attention wanders, he stops and runs round the cage / play pen before jumping back on the wheel. If I go to sleep, he heads for bed, with maybe another quick run before dawn. His cage is right next to my bed 😀 but I enjoy our night time get togethers. I sleep very lightly though and wake up alot. During the day he sleeps solidly.

He's maybe still just settling in as well :-) One thing I used to do if a hamster hid away a lot, was put their piece of veg on the opposite end of the cage to where they nest/sleep on a little plate or jar lid. If you put it out around 8pm or 9pm maybe? The smell always tempted them out at that time and they'd need to cross the cage to get it - at that time, on the way back, I used to offer the rat tube taxi, for them to walk into and have out of cage time. They soon then got in the habit of waking up at veg time and enjoying out of cage time.

One of my current hamsters, Tino, was the exception to that. I actually ended up giving him less bedding and he wants out quite a lot now! He had 10" before and he only has about 8" now at his house end.

I’ve waited up a few nights but he must come out quite late or very early. The only time I see him is when I purposely go find him which I was trying to avoid lol he’s eating and drinking though so he must be happy! He never had any bedding deeper than an inch so I figure he’s enjoying himself. But I will have to “dig him up” soon as he doesn’t use the sand as a toilet like Chubbs did so I need to check out his nest. I spot clean a corner that he seems to use as well. Will keep updated!

I just dug him up! Doesn’t look like he came out to nibble last night so I wanted to check on him. But he’s fine! He looooooves the bedding. He’s down 9 inches in there! Hahahaha maybe he just doesn’t hoard as much as Chubbs did. He doesn’t like whimzees either :( he probably just never had any of that and he’s already 2 years old at least. He did nibble some millet the other day tho so maybe he’ll figure it all out!

Hopefully you will see him more as he gets used to the palce. Maybe he is a bit less prone to exploration given his age? But most importantly he is enjoying the place and found a safe spot :)

Yeah I imagine that has something to do with it. He’s already an old man! I like to sleep a lot too in the winter!
