Just thought we could do with an updated thread on current hamster mixes. @Yorkie was talking about one called Hammykins (is that right?) that used to be called Chubby Cheeks. And I know there are quite a few options this days, in addition to the usual commercial ones from Bunny Dream, Rodipet, Harry Hamster etc.

So I'll ask @Yorkie to update again on the Hammykins mix. Does it look as nice as it does in the photos? Because my Mixerama one doesn't :ROFLMAO: The Mixerama one looks amazing in the photos and kind of all brown in reality. But the hamsters really love it.

I currently use a mix of Harry Hamster, Bunny Dream and Mixerama. I don't know why I still bother with the Harry Hamster but it was all you could get during the pandemic and it was a while before I could get Bunny Dream again. However the Syrians do seem to like some of the bigger pieces in the Harry Hamster so I kept it in the mix. And they get the variety from the Bunny Dream and Mixerama. And I supplement the protein a bit.

It's the Mixerama "Goldhamster Gourmet Menu" I get. And it seems to taste better than it looks! (Based on hamster reaction). I sent for it at a time when I had had a minor moth outbreak and Mixerama say they pressure treat all their food so it kills off any moth eggs etc. I still freeze it for a week as well - but didn't quite switch over to it partly because the postage is extremely expensive and also it can take a while to get here. Plus the hamsters seem happy with the current mix and variety.

The food itself is not that expensive, but the tax and postage on top made it about 40 euros (about £34) for two bags of food! Hence I use it as a one third mix with the HH and Bunny dream.

In addition to those mentioned above, there is also the Little One mix which is still fairly easily available and inexpensive - however it is very low on protein so not the best option for new hamster owners IMO who may not realise the protein needs supplementing.

I went "off" the Rodipet Syrian mix after having a bad batch once (which was during the pandemic so maybe a one off).

Yes,Hammykins looks as good as the photos imo. It's smells lovely too,you can smell the sweet peppers etc,and see the chicken and meal worms . I get it on subscription monthly, and including postage it's quite expensive, twenty pounds for 500g bag.
However ,Bunny Nature Hamster Dream Expert isn't exactly cheap either, but I was not impressed by the look of it. Again it's all about personal preference ,and the pandemic didn't help with options.

The Hammykins one looks like an excellent option. It's great if it smells lovely too. I quite like the Bunny Dream Syrian expert one - and it does smell quite nice and certainly a lot better than Harry Hamster and has mealworms in, but it won't be in the same league as one of natural mixes. However it has really small pieces and lots of seeds and I think there aren't enough bigger Syrian sized items in it, which is why I mix it with something else. The dwarf version seems popular with dwarf and roborovski hamsters but I use the rodipet dwarf food usually, which seems popular.

And yes Bunny Dream isn't cheap either - it's only really available from Vetsend now (or possibly ebay) and also shipped from abroad - Netherlands - and about £10 a bag. I did try a Getzoo one once but wasn't keen and it was very low on protein so needed a lot of supplementing.

We probably need a new list of the latest suitable ones :) As things keep changing.

Yes ,I agree,a new list would be great as Hammykins now do a dwarf version too.

🐹I started Kage on Premium Hamster Food Mix 2.5ltr for £9.99 from Amazon. Does anyone have any comments on this one - good, bad or indifferent. It has good reviews, but that doesn't always mean a great deal.

It looks like Harry Hamster food and probably has the same ingredients. Its quite a good basic food. Socks likes the maize kernels which are likely good for keeping his teeth worn down.

It looks like this one linked below. It might look similar to Harry Hamster but it isn't Harry Hamster and there is no list of ingredients so you have no idea what's in it. Does it have an ingredients list and a breakdown of the protein, fat etc on the tub? I think there would be a better mix for him to be honest. I've never heard of that one before. Looking closely it seems to be a lot of pellets, some dried peas, some dried fruit maybe, very few grains and a few sunflower seeds. It might not be sugar free either.

That's the one, by Hungry Pets. There's nothing on the tub about ingredients. I took this screenshot, but it's a general list of ingredients, nothing specific.

If there's no list of ingredients I wouldn't use it to be honest. Any hamster food should have a list of ingredients and the nutritional analysis clearly shown. I also couldn't see anything on the site listing.

For now you could just get Harry Hamster - it contains everything needed.

It needs to be this one - the original one, not the new fruity nutty one.

Tiny Friends Harry Hamster original.

You could keep giving the current one of course meanwhile and the Harry Hamster will ideally need a week in the freezer before you can use it anyway! So you'll need to keep going with the current one until then. But I would supplement the protein as it's likely to not have enough. Maybe just give a bit of chopped boiled egg or scrambled egg a couple of times a week, and half a walnut a couple of times a week. He'll love those anyway!

Unfortunately you can't always believe the advertising blurb and descriptions. Some of these mixes are terrible!

I found this description about it on an ebay listing. Which again is just words and no ingredients list published or nutritional analysis published.

"Hungry Pets premium hamster food mixture provides essential nutrients that are crucial for the well-being of your furry companions. The pellets in the mix are specifically formulated to provide a balanced combination of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. This helps support their overall growth, muscle development, and proper body functions."

Which all sounds good but they don't put their money where their mouth is! Ie list the ingredients (with the largest number of ingredients first) and the nutritional analysis so you can see for yourself what the balance is. On another Amazon listing it talks about "crunchy kibble" whatever that is. And in the blurb above it does say it contains dried fruits. While Syrians can eat fruit, dried fruits usually contain sugar and preservatives and it's best to have a hamster mix without them. They can still say no "added" sugar because the dried fruit is an ingredient on its own and will contain sugar and preservatives.

The tub could be useful in future though!

I should have had a tub delivered today, but it didn't arrive. Amazon have said if it doesn't arrive tomorrow, to ask for a refund, but I think I'll send it back after what you have said. Tapping on the link you sent for Tiny Friends Harry Hamster original, it comes up Supreme Original Harry Hamster Food Complete Muesli. Is that the one?

I have read dried fruit is not as suitable as fresh for hamsters, so I don't want Kage to have that.

Yeah, it's a good tub 🤣

My sister bought the "hammykins " dwarf hamster for her robo (Mr Cheese) and she said he likes it. He wasn't eating the bunny or the little one.

At the moment I'm using up a bag of pets at home muesli (I pick out a Lot of the corn) I only feed occasionally, and little one hamster food which I mainly use. I give mealworms and dried chicken for protein along with this. And seed mixes from hamster helper as an extra treat They especially love the "very veggie" mix.

I cancelled the Premium Hamster Food Mix and ordered Tiny Friends Harry Hamster Original that arrived this morning. It's in the freezer now will next Saturday. We'll see how Kage gets on with that one. It's good that on this Forum people are willing to share their thoughts and opinions on all things hamster. Finding my way round little by little 😀

I asked for a refund on an Amazon purchase that hadn't arrived and they kept the £5 delivery fee 🙁 Asking for a refund was the only option they offered 😒

Yes that’s the one - it’s because it used to be called Suoreme Harry Hanster and they changed the name to Tiny Friebds Harry Hamster. It’s the same thing though. That’s a bit much if they still charged a delivery fee!

Yes, Amazon has changed quite a bit over the years. They seem to want you to take out Prime, but I don't want the commitment, it's not how I shop 🙁

I do have prime - originally it was for films. But we hardly ever use it for that. I kept it because we do so much online shopping, being rural, that it was worth it. It does give free shipping and next day delivery. But if you don’t do Amazon shopping that often it probably isn’t worth it.

I bought the Ferplast cage from Amazon. It was pounds cheaper than Ebay where I used do a lot of online shopping. Now I use Amazon a lot aswell, though I do like to sniff out the bargains and free delivery 😄. I used to criticise online shoppers. I'd say "why don't they get up and go to the shops like everyone else?" (or in words similar 😄) but I'm as bad for it as anyone now 😄. I found online shopping so much more convenient - and so very me 😄.

I think I might have had something to say to Amazon for keeping the deliver charge as it wasn't even delivered. What a nerve!

Was it Amazon themselves or a marketplace seller? If they haven’t shipped it, you shouldn’t be paying a delivery charge.
