I m looking for the beat diet for a Russian or Chinese dwarfhamster.
I have been feeding Bunny, but my previous hamsters were very selective with it, and it has low protein.
This is a Dutch webshop with lots of the available foods.

I was thinking Mixerema, but which one? And it is not fortified with vitamins. I wonder if that is a good or bad thing, in nature hamsters do not use supplements.
What is your opinion on natural fiets without added vitamins?

What do you think is the best food for a dwarf and why?

I think Mixerama is an excellent choice and the dwarf magic mix seems very good. It only has 15.6% protein but then so does bunny dream.

I don’t think they do contain fortified vitamins so what some people do is give 2 or 3 science selective pellets daily as well, which contain everything needed.

I’m using Mixerama for Higgins.

I think this one also looks good, it has higher protein:

is it needed to add something with fortified vitamins? i mean, wild hamsters do only eat natural stuff without added vitamins.
don't you think a natural diet can provide everything they need?

also, what do you use for taming snacks? i always used mealworms, but maybe there are healthier options that they also go nuts for? :)

Hmm - it seems to be grain free and just mainly have seeds and animal protein? It has silkworm pupae, dried shrimps and crickets. So a lot of things for protein that the hamster might or might not eat.

I personally would prefer the Mixerama. And no you can’t guarantee they get everything they need from these natural mixes - especially if they ignore some ingredients. Hence suggesting adding a few science selective pellets which do contains vitamins and correct protein levels. 😊.

Could i freeze the science selective food? I think the bag would last very long when only feeding 3 pellets daily.

Yes I’ve frozen it 😊. The bags have a very long shelf life usually and mine have usually gone out of date before finished - about two years later!

I feed her a mealworm or gammarus, or some fresh vegetables by hand. So far, she loves chicory and will also eat a little cucumber.

She also enjoys her Mixerama food mix, though she leaves a lot of the dried herbs uneaten, so I’ve now mixed the Dwarf Hamster Zwergenzauber Magic with the Mixerama Dwarf Hamster Basic Menu 1/1.
There’s also a separate bowl with dried herbs and flowers in her cage.

I’ve removed the mealworms from the food mix and now feed them to her by hand; I’ve read that too much animal protein can be hard on the kidneys, so I don’t want to give her too many. The mixture of the above foods has a protein content of 14%, which is a bit too low. How can I supplement this without giving too much animal protein? I’ve tried Science Selective, but she hasn’t eaten it so far.
Is this mix alone, without any extra additions, sufficient, or can I, for example, give her some extra Gammarus by hand? Or should I just stick with the Science Selective for now?

Droppie is doing great on her Mixerama mix, but it is a bit low on protein.
She does love the freeze dried niteangel tofu, but i cannot find a analyse for protein and fat, not even on the package, so i am not sure of it adds enough protein.
I mixed some gammarus in her Mixerema food, but she doesn't eat any of it, she will take a mealworm sometimes, but not much.
Is eggfood (for birds) ok and safe to feed? i worry about ingredients (sugar)
maybe i need to be a bit more strict about the science selective, it will add vits an mins and protein if she wil eat it....
mainfood would still be the Mixerama mixture, but i need her to start eating the science selective too.... how can i convince her?

How about a bit of chopped hard boiled egg a couple of times a week? :-) They love fresh food. Also pine nuts.

Those Niteangel freeze dried tofu bites look good as well. I don't think mazuri is the best option really.

I will try some egg with her, i am a bit afraid for spoilage....

Also how much egg can i give her to supplement the protein in the Mixerama mix?
(When she doesn't eat any ss)

The mix has about 14-15% protein.

She gets a bit of the niteangel tofu daily, some fresh veggies, and dried herbs/flowers, and i still offer science selective.

I just put a little bit out the size of her ear maybe once or twice a week :-) On a separate little dish or on a tile. She should eat what she wants straight away - I think with fresh food like that they get so excited they start nibbling. If she leaves any just remove it again. You can't work out the protein exactly but it's a good protein boost and with the tofu as well it should be fine. It's a shame she doesn't like science selective as that contains everything needed.

Yes, that's a shame, it could provide some vitamins too.
I'll try softening the kibble a bit with warm water, maybe she'll be willing to give it a try then, and once she's tasted it...
