Looking for a cage upgrade for more space and enrichment. I currently have the savic hamster sky without the tubes. I don't want a cage that is too much bigger due to space and cost. No more than £100

I just noticed I haven't upgraded your account since you rejoined so you're still on "new member"! I'll sort that now.

An upgrade could be a Savic Plaza 100 which is £80 from Pets at Home. It's basically just 20cm longer than the hamster sky, same depth. And it's also taller. So if it's for a syrian, that's fine - room for a syrian sized wheel and deeper bedding (with cardboard or perspext round the inside eg). If it's for a dwarf hamster you'd definitely want to have a good depth of bedding to effectively reduce the height so it's not too tall.

The Savic Plaza is here and I've linked our cages list below in case you see anything else. You can actually pick the Plaza 100 up quite easily second hand for about £35 as well.

https://fave.co/3TvVP01 (note, this is an affiliate link - it means if you buy the cage from this link, the forum gets paid a small commission, at no extra cost to you :-) ie it helps fund the forum running costs.

But you may prefer to get a cheaper second hand one!

This is the cages list.

It looks very nice :-) He has some lovely things in there. I take it he's a dwarf hamster? You'd find the Savic Plaza 100 very similar to use with the big front opening door, but it's taller and is a "knockdown" cage (ie you assemble the top part and it can come apart to be stored flat in future). However, once assembled, you don't need to take the top off - I do everything through the front door - but for that you need the cage at the right height (mine has been on a Kallax unit before and on a similar height unit now). It can be more fiddly fixing the wheel to the back bars with it being taller and so it's easier to attach that before you put the assembled bars on top of the base (unless you have a second pair of hands!).

If he's a dwarf, you might prefer the Grosvenor XL cage on that list though - it is slightly deeper so has more floor space, but is a lower height, so less risk of falls. With it being lower, you can't fit deep bedding in throughout but you could have one deep bedding end. If you can fit in the extra depth (it's about 54cm deep instead of 50cm). But it is top opening only if that makes a difference - the whole roof top lifts up. It's a similar height to your current cage.

Aw he's lovely. How old is he now? I would probably suggest the Grosvenor XL over the Plaza 100. That's available on Amazon. Similar price.

It comes in grey

Or black

The black seems more popular! Those are affiliate links again :-)

At a year old he will be feeling fairly settled in his current cage, but will also benefit from more space. So there are pros and cons to the Grosvenor XL and Savic Plaza in terms of familiarity. The Grosvenor is a similar height so will feel more familiar, be a bit safer, and means he won't be scared by extra space above him as he would in the Plaza. On the other hand the access is at the top and he's used to a front door. The Plaza will feel familiar in that it's the same depth as the current cage and a large front door for access as before - but it's a lot taller and he'll notice all the extra space above him and might find it a bit scary. It also has fall risks depending on how its set up. So set up makes a difference too.

So I would either get the Plaza but "reduce" the internal height by having 10" deep bedding. To do that you'll need cardboard or perspex about 5 to 6" high inside the bars, and fill it with 10" of bedding. That is a lot of bedding, but you don't need to clean out as often with more bedding so it lasts a long time.

This would be the closest to his current familiar set up - same front access, same depth of cage and same height above substrate level. But quite fiddly to set up maybe.

Or - get the Grosvenor XL, easier to set up and manage, have cardboard or perspex (or grass mats) inside the bars just at one end, and have a deep bedding end. This is easier, safe and a familiar height for him - but he will notice the front door isn't there any more. However he'll probably get used to it quite quickly but it's surprising how they notice changes.

Either way, if doing a cage move, post back on here before you do it so we can suggest a way to do it that helps him settile in quickly and avoids stress :-)
