Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has owned Hamsters and Rats at the same time?
I have a wonderful Syrian boy who is sweet and very content with his space.
I was considering adopting a pair of rats. I know hamsters can get stressed really easily.

Obviously they would never interact and I would wash my hands hands.
Would they be able to come out and run around in the same room/area. I realize they both mark their territory so I'm worried this will stress my guy out as well as the new rats.

I may be answering my own questions, but would love to get advice if anyone has experience or thoughts.

Thank you

Hello and welcome. We have had members who have had different pets :) I am not that up on rats and some people will say it would be better to keep them in separate rooms and others will say their pets are in the same room and no issues. As you already have the hamster, would it be possible to have the rats in a different room? He may adjust to it but I think one issue could be, if they free roamed in the same room/area the rats should be kept well away from the hamster's cage and not be able to climb it.

Ideally I think they would be better having separate play areas and not be out at the same time. However if you only have the one area then maybe clean it in between them, but not share toys etc.

It is possible the hamster may get a bit jealous! But that depends on the hamster.

They must never come into direct contact with each other though.

Thanks Maz,
I did think of that! Not sure how he would feel.

I went to get his food at the adoption place and they had some lovely rats there.
They are in the same room but its different when you have them home.
they would be in the same room but I would use a big play pen so they wouldn't go near his home and nobody would be out at the same time.

I really like my guys to be able to stretch their legs if I can so it sounds like I need to have different areas for each which may be possible.
