Cinnamon

Why don't you clean the en suite toilet when he's in the playpen? I'd add a thicker layer of sand so you can scoop out the clumps.

I've never had a camera so have no idea of the hamsters nightly routines and behaviours. I go by the fresh food which they all enjoy. If the food is still untouched by the morning i check on them.
Those are good points. I was thinking of doing the cleaning when he's in the play pen. I think this time I was just a bit over-anxious to check on it because he stayed in for a couple of days and maybe I had forgotten the last time I'd taken him out. Also that is true about the fresh food. He's been good about clearing his daily salad 😊

So... last night Cinnamon poked his head out quickly as soon as I started making food noise around 9:30PM. He climbed into his transport fairly quickly for a salad, pouching his broccoli immediately. After putting him in the playpen I cleaned out his litter tray and added a thicker layer of sand/ bedding. By the time I was done I went back to visit with him a bit. He was his sweet, gentle self, but not too long after I sat down he ran back into his transport (which I leave in the pen), as if to say, "Okay, I checked this place out, got my food, and now you can bring me back!" Instead of dropping him off by the door to his hideaway, I placed him in his coconut fiber dig box. He took his time rooting around, then poked his head into each area of his enclosure where he knows I often hide food, pouched it, grabbed a drink, and then retreated to his hideaway. He came out again from 11:30PM-12:30AM and did use his wheel, but that was it!

When I woke up in the morning I noticed that the house was rather cool. It has started to get cooler except in the middle of the day, so we haven't run the A/C, but also haven't put the heat on. It made me think that it could just be the coolness that's kept him in more the past 2 nights. In any event, I've relaxed about his behavior variance. He's still eating and he comes out when he wants to, and let's me know when he doesn't want to or when he wants to return to his enclosure.

The change in the weather, they do sometimes change routines with the changing seasons, temperature & light.
He sounds quite content pouching everything he can find & tucking himself away in his house.

He is such a sweet gentle hamster :-) Sorry he doesn't decide to stay out longer! But he sounds very content. One thing you could try is getting him out earlier - eg maybe getting him into a routine of waking up for 7.30pm feeding time or something? Then tempting him out then. They do vary but I used to find that early even our first one was very active, and the same after about 10pm but in between he was quite dopey and would just go to sleep on you when out of the cage.

Yes! I know I overthink things sometimes, but ultimately he is very content with his simple routine :) Of course, we wish he came out more for us, but what's most important is that he's comfortable and content.

You know, I should try to tempt him out earlier more often. The times we have he often is more energetic. Honestly, even though he doesn't stay out very long later at night, his reliability (compared to our previous hamster) has made me a little lazy about taking him out earlier. If we're busy, I think to myself, "It's fine; we'll see him before bed..."

How is little Cinnamon doing? Any more excursions?

So, I meant to update a week ago, but then we had a busy weekend and it slipped my mind. Of course, a few days after my worried post about Cinnamon coming out less often, he came out and had excursions outside of his cage for a few days in a row. In addition to staying out for awhile, he was sitting in my hands for much longer than a few months ago for pets, which I enjoyed even if he was only tolerating it. :) I had planned to post about how nice this progress was, but the weekend slipped away from me, and then he went back to his somewhat hidey ways! Not inactive, just more active after we went to bed.

In any case, he had come out a few days in a row, and I also wanted to give him space if he wanted it, so I didn't try to tempt him out if I didn't see him. However, Sunday night we did make some cage updates, so I set up a night camera because I wanted to see how he reacted to some things. He was quite active on camera (I'll attach some later) rooting around his coconut fiber dig box where we sprinkled some seed mix and generally rooting around his enclosure and the different places we scatter food.

I've experimented with letting him out into our office space outside of his playpen. I had been looking around our office space and thinking, we really don't have much on the floor, so with a little work I could transform most of the room into a hamster-safe space. Of course, when I take him out he acts very similar to when I put him in his larger exploratory space (next to his playpen I used zip-tied plastic shelves to block off part of the room)... he looks around with interest for about one minute... then finds a space next to a table leg and hunkers down...quite literally. I have to goad him back into his transport.

So this brings me to last night, in which I feel like he decided to exhibit the full range of his personality. He was poking his head out when he heard us in the room at night. So I offered him some broccoli and tried to tempt into walking into his transport, which he did (if he really doesn't want to come out, he won't go in, even if food is offered). I pet him while he was eating his broccoli in his transport and he was very calm, and after a few minutes he decided he wanted to climb out and explore, so I brought him to his playpen. He rooted around in some areas of the playpen briefly, and then found a corner in a cardboard hide corner and just hunkered down- like did a little eating and a little cleaning then just sort of sat in a curled position like he had no intention of moving. When I could see that he didn't want to go anywhere or do anything I offered him his transport, and I had to goad him back in! There are plenty of times when he is more active in the playpen, but I think these later times he can be a little more 'dopey' and not as interested in "playing." It just always makes me scratch my head a little when he has a chance for out-of-cage play and seems to prefer to find a hideout and stay put.

We did have a new snack mix and gave him a piece of freeze-dried tofu, which he seemed very interested in. So at least when I finally placed him back in his transport and brought him back to his cage, he got to take a special treat for his troubles with him. And he is pretty much a broccoli addict. If he has a mini-salad, it's the first thing he grabs and hoards each time, so he's getting daily broccoli right now as a fresh-food treat.

The video shared here is of him on one of his active days last week. We got new toys through a Hamster and Me subscription box, so we put them in the playpen for him to check out. Some of them later got added to his enclosure.

Lovely video of Cinnamon, it’s nice that he does enjoy coming out for a little while & is a bit more active some days but he does seem to like the quiet life, he’s such a sweet little ham.

Hello beautiful Cinnamon. He really is gorgeous and fluffy. He sounds a bit like our first Hamster Charlie, who only wanted to come out every 2 or 3 days and then needed to be tempted out into a tube as he liked his cosy house! It's funny how sometimes they are more active and sometimes just sit in a corner. He looks to be having a lovely time there though! I loved the fleece flower blanket by the way. I think all hamsters go crazy for broccoli! All mine have anyway :) He really is a gentle sweetie.

Yep to all of this! We just found someone who was selling the fleece flower blanket in a small size "for hamsters," though obviously it could be for many pets. I thought it was such a fun idea and he seems to be enjoying it. He picked at it last night, too, before finding his corner

It's lovely. I wonder if they sell it in the Uk

I can't believe it's been nearly 2 weeks since I posted about Cinnamon! Nothing too eventful. He's his usual self and we laugh and roll our eyes at his ways (there he is trying to grab a snack and sneak it back to his hide before we can try to pet him or interact with him). He never comes out with an interest in seeing us, but if he's relaxed I'll use fresh food to coax him into his transport and then he'll spend some time with us. He's calm about being handled once he's out, but he seems to mostly like being out with us for the purpose of getting extra treats. Other than that he'll look for a corner, tube or hide to hunker down in once he's explored treat spaces. I even tried to revamp our "office" room to make it fully hamster-safe to give him a larger exploration area. I sat in there with him at first and then left him for a time while I checked on his hideaway chamber to see if it needed freshening. I returned to find him in the large cardboard tube we had placed in the free roam space. He was sitting in the middle of the tube attending to food he'd pouched and just hanging out. I had to coax him back out to bring him to his enclosure!

We've recently added blueberry to his daily salad. This was an addition he really liked, so I've cut up a blueberry a day recently for his salad, alongside broccoli and sometimes other veggie bits or apple bits. Last night I added a cucumber slice, which we hadn't had in awhile, and he grabbed that quickly, carrying the slice between his teeth as he retreated to his hide :) I'll have to try to get more pictures or video soon!

Cinnamon is still doing well. We take him out a couple days in a row sometimes, and then leave him be for a few days in a row. He gets a daily fresh salad and his mix of seeds and nutrient blocks. Sometimes I "lead" him out of his hideaway with food just so that I can give him a little pet while he munches his salad without taking him out. He gets his privacy and his salad and I get a mini-snuggle.

I cleaned out our office room so that the whole space could be a safe free roam space, but in true Cinnamon-style, he doesn't seem all that enthusiastic about it  He will roam around and then find a spot to hunker down in, typically next to a table leg of our large office desk (see video), because it's dark. So we alternate between giving him some playpen time (which is stuffed with things to crawl in and out of) and then some brief free-roaming in the whole room. He does enjoy the playpen, but only for a short bit before he chooses his "hunker-down" spot.

2 days ago I cleaned out his indoor (hideaway) litter tray and it was quite fragrant. I felt like the ammonia smell was lingering a bit even after I changed it out, but I couldn't identify any other soiled spots. I didn't notice it so much the next day, so I'm wondering if it was just because about a week had gone by before I changed out his indoor tray. I spot-clean his outdoor sandbath daily. Tonight I did open the lid on his hideaway when he wasn't coming out just to see if he was in his litter tray or not. I decided to reach in and remove his litter tray and clean it out (except I left the two food items he'd brought in there) and then slip it back into his hideaway. I tried to make this as unobtrusive as possible, only cracking the lid long enough to slip the tray out and in. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I usually only go in there if he is already out of his hideaway to respect his space as much as possible. His litter box is in its own chamber, so I thought I could try changing it with minimal intrusion. When I came back from cleaning it (rinsed the old sand out in the bathroom, replaced the sand and layered a little of his cage bedding that would already have his scent on it) and cracked the lid of his hideaway he was sitting where his litter tray usually is, like "what happened here?" He moved away so I could replace it and then I let him be, other than offering him a sweet potato nugget at his doorway as a reward for his patience (which he took from my fingers).

Here is a video of him in one of his preferred "table leg" hideaways in the free roam space. My daughter picked out a small pet treat while at a pet store with her friend and Cinnamon is curious, but largely uninterested in the donut-shaped nutrient block.

Your daughter is so sweet and gently with Cinnamon and it always makes me smile. Lucky Cinnamon having so much space to free roam. Maybe he just needs a little time to get used to that. :)

He really is - beautiful and gentle. Don't worry about lifting the roof to empty the litter tray :-) It's necessary. I need to do it a couple of times a week as well. And what you describe is very common! Most of my syrians have done that - investigated the area where the litter tray was and then plonked themselves there so you can't put it back easily! Sort of guarding the area I think - or just being nosey and wondering what's going on. Raffy did that quite recently so I had to continue lowering the cleaned out litter tray with new sand, gently until he moved out of the way a bit! Or gently guide him out of the way. They usually appreciate it when it's done :-) I know Raffy does.

I try and do it when he's out of the cage but it's not always possible, so then I do it at a time he's more likely to be awake. Eg early to mid evening. I think Cinnamon is so lovely and mellow and will become more so - and maybe a bit more chilled and interactive, as he gets older :-) He is clearly very comfortable with your daughter.

She cracks me up because even though we only take him out every few days she is so in love with him, which I only bring up because some children might tire of not getting to have daily interaction like they would with a cat (though not all cats) or dog.

Who could not be in love with fluffy gentle Cinnamon? :) He has a lovely personality. If he was maverick like mine he might be entertaining but a child may be more nervous of him.
