Hi, we just got our first hamster Oreo a few days ago and have the Omlet cage. He’s made his nest in the cardboard multi chamber hide and has only been out at night when it’s dark so far. I think he’s gradually settling in though and getting used to the sound of our voices. My question is about cleaning the nest. Do I just leave it alone for a week or two? I can’t see in there at all unless I lift it up and disturb the area. I’m worried I scare him (even though I would only consider checking when he’s awake) but equally not sure if it’s clean inside.

Hello :-)

Usual advice is just spot clean the pee after a week or so - but that depends.

a) on how deep the bedding is
b) whether you can smell anything!

Basically if you can't smell pee then it's fine to leave it a bit longer. Baby hamsters sometimes pee in their nestng area until they get into better habits as they get a bit more mature, so it's possible he's peeing in the house somewhere, but it might be in a different "room" to where he's nesting.

So let your nose guide you :-) Does he have a sandbath or a litter tray? Some of them pee in a sandbath or choose a corner of the cage as a toilet.
