Duprasi, the missing link between hamsters and gerbils.

Forgot to add, they do eat seeds etc. I have hammikins dwarf and bunny dwarf hamster feeds mixed as my basic feed, with the dried insects added in in large quantities

Duprasi are quite fascinating! I wonder if the fat helps to slow down rises and falls in body temperature. I suppose once domesticated, their temperature preferences possibly change. Yes, if Moth still has her wild instincts, she might find your cat frightening. Sleeping during the heat of the day must be away of dealing with extreme heat. Is she nippy or growly?

Moth seems to be ‘angry squeak’ and bitey she’s manages to draw blood, which is always a bit of an issue for me. Once I’m bleeding, I take forever to stop, so have to go and get a plaster, or it looks like a crime scene  This means that she’s learnt biting gets rid f me! But I’ve done another waxworm and talked to her again tonight, so progress!

It is progress! Maybe try wearing a thick glove for a bit?

I have a pair of wool gloves I’ve been using, it lessens the depth of the bite :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Unfortunately I left them out and came back to find the cat sat on them! You couldn’t make it up! Luckily my fingers are fairly safe at the moment, as most contact is done via waxworm tweezers

The cat is trying to make a point ha ha.

She's a bit jealous 🐈🐾
Oh yes. Ferdinand is a very needy boy, so I suspect anything that takes my attention of him is bad. Like sleep, eating my dinner, knitting……. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Just to give you an idea, here is a normal evening…….

A good hour he can lie like that, purring all the while!

Here’s some more photos of Moth. Accidentally caught her this morning, she wasn’t overly thrilled, but she got a waxworm out of it, so hopefully that helps!

She looks pretty content there! It sounds like progress. When they are tame, do they like out of cage time? Eg would they sit on the sofa or enjoy a playpen?

They would do, they are supposed to be very placid and chilled. The only caveat with sofas is probably very similar to hamsters……. Don’t let them fall off the edge! I’ve not been big on out of cage time due to the cat, and it’s why I made my cages bigger than standard….. back when standard was smaller. Moth will eventually be getting a 120 x 60 cm cage. I just need to finalise the plans.

I’m begining to think Moth and I are never going to be friends, but I’ve managed to set up a camera, so I can at least see her……..
She’s really taken to wheels! The way her back legs go! Now if I can attach the wheel to the mains, I reckon she’ll power the pump for the fish tank 😂😂

Sorry, I can’t seem to attach the video. It’s probably not in the right format……

It's still very early days! And she sounds in love with her wheels :-) I take it she has more than one wheel?

For videos, this site uses embedded youtube videos. So you upload it to youtube (unlisted if you don't want it public), then past the web address link for the video in a post and it embeds so the video can be watched directly on the site :-)

Ok, instructions hopefully followed (seriously, menopause brain is actually real 😱)

I noted that she did manage to stop properly at the end, but went flying again later! 🙄. She’s only had a wheel for 2 weeks, so I guess it’s still a bit of a learning curve. Hmmmm lecture series on centrifugal forces aimed at small rodents anyone? 🤔😂😂

She is going really fast! And she did fly out! All I can suggest is an enclosed wheel - it can't happen! I used to worry that they would try and jump out of the holes and hurt themselves that way but they just seem to run differently in the enclosed wheels with the holes and are curious about the holes and stop now and then and sniff them and check out the exit.

If it's been a couple of weeks she should have got the hang of it by now! The thing with larger wheels is perhaps that it's not as easy for them to do a 360 loop over the top! But they can still fly out.

And I know the feeling - you don't want to be spending a fortune on different wheels. Wheels are silly prices these days. The trixie one is the cheapest I think but that has the spindle. I guess you could try a 12" silent runner - they're about £26 from the sugar glider shop (enclosed front with holes) if you don't mind orange! A lot of the others are over £40.

Yes, with the youtube videos, if you don't want them public on youtube, just save them as "unlisted" and then they only show where you paste the link (ie on here). Don't set them to private though or they just don't show up at all! Just a black box saying private.

She seems to be learning how to control the wheel. The Rolly wheel from Savic is a bit slower and heavier, she might get on with it. It's not expensive 🛞

Much better! I'd stick with it for now. I actually stopped bothering when my robo used to fly out because it didn't seem to bother him! He just picked himself up and jumped back on the wheel again. I can't remember how long it was before he was fully running in a controlled way but it looks like she's getting there :-)
