Aww Eddie what’s happening!
With my Russians I used to put a small container with sand in the spot where they pee in the house & they used that.

I have a dwarf Rodipet toilet but it is ceramic so i worry about the weight.

Eddie is young, about 4/5 months. At least i know where he pees now and i can take the roof of his house off whithout taking the wire top off. Hopefully, he'll come out more often again and then i clean his pee corner.

I've put the toilet in now on the base. At least it should protect the wood. I used a bit of aspen instead of sand because he doesn't pee in sand. He had this toilet with sand outside his house but didn't use it.

Those ceramic trays can be a bit heavy if they’re likely to burrow under them. I’ve used a few things one was the tins Lush sells for their massage bars that worked well. Just wonder if he would pee in sand if it was in the house rather than outside. The aspen might work just as well though.

I don't think he'd burrow underneath it because he sleeps opposite the toilet corner. Usually hamsters sleep in the far back corner of the house but Eddie does it in reverse and sleeps by the side entrance with the toilet at the far back. I think he gets into the house through the front entrance via a tunnel from the burrowing area. The house is submerged in Kaytee so it's dark.

I know what you mean about them being a bit heavy - I sort of stopped worrying about that (Newt used to tunnel under his and it would subside) - don't think they're that heavy, especially the small one (even for a dwarf). But it did used to tip over if tunneled under which was a bit pointless - at one time I had a small carrot cottage on the base surrounded by substrate (ie underground) and the potty sat on top of that. He might actually pee in sand if it's inside his house :) .

But as you say he's only young :) I'm sure he'll get into some good habits. And he's so cute you have to forgive him lol! Be interested to see if he uses it! I've only ever had one hamster who just never got the hang of a potty (Pickle) and used it to sleep, pee and hoard in! He did get there eventually but it took a very long time! I think it was partly the type of house he had that didn't help.

Raffy has the large ceramic one, on top of a lot of substrate, and it stays put - he doesn't dig under it (much! Sometimes I find some hoard under it).

Last night Eddie got up while i was tidying toys and sat on his shelf briefly then climbed up the bars once while i put the barrier up.
I opened the door to let him out but he was running in his wheel by then and refused to come out of his wheel.
I chatted to him, tried to tempt him with treats but no, Eddie kept running in his wheel. He paused now and again just to go off wheeling again.
No matter what i tried, he didn't budge.

I think he's quite stubborn. If i don't get him out when he wants to come out he moves on to the next thing and i've blown my chance of interacting with him.

Unlike Clive, Lilly and Otto who want to come out, Eddie doesn't seem fussed whether he does or not.

Aw, Eddie is feeling comfortable to be assertive now. What a wonderful sign he is feeling comfortable and settled.

Maybe it’s the teenage years!
He does sound as though he’s quite content with his cage though.

Yes, i think he's happy enough with his home. He knows that he can come out if he wants to but i was surprised that he changed from climbing the bars looking for a way out to 'i'm not coming out' within a minute or two! He does love his wheel though.

Maybe he's a in a huff because you moved his toilet :) Definitely teenage years lol.

Eddie was in his sandbath this morning so i cleaned his en suite toilet.
He freeroamed for a little while and came back to me when i called him.

Eddie eating his sunflower seeds. I only let him get a couple or so before removing the jar.

Eddie looks like he’s enjoying life! Love that second photo of him with the jar, his little tail is so cute 😍

It's so lovely that he comes to you when you call him :)

Maybe wasn't the brightest idea to let a dwarf freeroam this time of the night and took me a while to find him when i wanted to go to bed.

That's him back in his wheel now.

Oh dear! He's a bit of a camouflage colour as well! Did it take long to find him? I get that with Raffy sometimes. He hovers round my feet and stays in visible distance - until I decide to put him back in the cage, then he's nowhere to be seen and goes quiet and doesn't come when called. What I usually do then is leave the room - then he comes out ha ha - wondering where I've gone.

Yes, he blends in well with the carpet. They started hoards in hidden places i can't get to unless i move stuff so didn't come when i called him. He was probably busy munching somewhere. I removed all the boxes from under the futon and saw him sitting there washing. He came out then and i scooped him up in my hands. He's not the fastest dwarf and easy to pick up. Just as well.
