I think you’re right about the bhaviour link with the diabetes Beryl, fluctuations in blood sugar can cause changes in how they feel & react to things.

He developed a fixation for the bars. The bin cage has a small barred window on the side where i attach the water bottle and he attempted to chew there. He gave up on that though and i'd like to know why.

Sometimes it can be really hard to know exactly what it is that’s going on with them, I guess all you can do is watch & wait to see how it goes.

Did you get the fenugreek seeds to try?

I haven't been able to find fenugreek seeds. Do you know who sells them? I suppose i'll have to resort to online shopping for that.

Fenugreek seeds are often used in Indian cooking so perhaps you could find some in a specialised shop. Sometimes it will be called Methi.

As Rainbow said they’re mostly used for cooking so any kind of Indian or Asian food shop probably the small independent type ones would have them.
A lot of online whole food shops have them but maybe not your general high street ones.
If you can’t find them there are loads of places you can buy online if you google it.

Thanks. I have googled them now. A lot of things carry warnings which acts as a disclaimer for the manufacturer i think. It states that fenugreek in high amounts could lower blood sugar to a dangerous level in humans and affect the digestive system, i.e. cause diarrhoea.
Obviously, this doesn't apply to hamsters but i wonder what the actual benefit would be to Eddie. I'm also reluctant to give him something that could possibly give him diarrhoea.
The packets of fenugreek say 'tangy and aromatic'. Is it similar to anisseed?

Fenugreek is used when urine sample shows either just high glucose or high glucose & high ketones to help reduce blood sugar levels, it’s supposed to be safe up to about 25 seeds which is a lot, I can’t see a hamster eating that many seeds raw or sprouted or having much of the fenugreek tea which is sometimes made up for them so it would take a lot of seeds to reach levels that cause diarrhoea or reduce blood glucose too much.
Vectis used to have some useful info on this but that’s gone now unfortunately.
I think they taste quite bitter but still a bit spicy, not like aniseed though and hard to describe really.
It would be best to just try a few seeds to begin with & see how it goes, he may not like them raw but you could try sprouting just for a day or two.
If you do use them you need to monitor his blood sugar so do more urine tests to keep an eye on how his glucose & ketones are doing.

Sofar Eddie seems to like the small bin cage. I just tried to scoop him out but he wasn't having it and walked away. He likes to sit in his sand and nibble his whimzee or doze in the coconut which seems a very boring life to me. Still better than frantically chewing bars though. I'll make him a treats tree tomorrow to see if that will grab his interest.

He does seem to like sitting in his sand. Amazon sell Fenugreek seeds. Organic, non GMO

Here

He’s so attached to his sand bath, it’s really sweet.
Hope he stays more settled now, he does sound very quiet but maybe he’ll liven up a little after he’s been in there a while.

That's great news, glad to hear this change is working out for him so far.

Eddie run on his wheel for a bit last night. I was very pleased to see him exercising.
By the morning he had jammed his wheel with substrate from digging.
Maybe i need to make him a bigger bin cage. I'm just not sure. He's definitely calmer without bars. I adjusted his cage so he can dig without jamming the wheel.
I took things out. Eddie climbed out by himself. When he saw his things on the floor he wasn't happy and nipped my foot to let me know.
Dwarfs can be little devils for that.
All sorted for now and will see how he gets on.
I put a crock on top of the carrot house. Eddie got out of his sand jar to get it and then decided to eat it lying on his side. The effort of retrieving it must have been too much 🙄.

I love that video! Eddie looks very relaxed there. 😍

Aww! That picture is sooo cute!

He does sound much better now.

Love the video & photo, that is just so adorable. Maybe he was just in such a hurry to enjoy it he couldn’t wait to carry it anywhere else!

The photo is very sweet - he looks like a baby kind of.

No they don’t like the changes and their stuff being messed with - and he let you know!
