Yesterday Bandit went to sleep forever.
He had stopped using his wheel, only coming out to get a drink and that was becoming difficult. He started to lose weight daily.
The night before I gave him a whole box of his favourite treats - lovelies. He must have thought he had gone to heaven. Usually only fed him a couple a week because they are a little sugary. I tipped the whole box outside of his hide and he had enough energy to collect half of them (and put them in his toilet!)
The next day before he went to the vets, I was scooping a good amount of his bedding out of the cage and to my surprise he hobbled out to say hello. This was unheard of, because he would normally hide when he heard us. He looked up at me as if to say "I'm ready daddy, it's time". I gave him a drink of water and popped him into his box with his nest and some of his hoard to try and make him as comfortable as possible.
He fell asleep in the corner of the transport box on the way to the vet and slept through the time waiting.
I really miss him. I just fed and changed Pumpkin's and Pebble's water. It was strange not doing Bandit's and giving him his meds and a treat.
I haven't cleaned his cage out yet, that is a job for next week.
I plan on burying him with all of the lovelies and his nest is a biodegradable bag and planting a plant on top of him so it can use his nutrients to grow.
I hope right now he is in a giant grass land, with so many different plants to forage and lovelies growing on trees. He can build a massive burrow with plenty of chambers and be free of anyone bothering him.
To Bandit, thank you for teaching me so much about hamsters. Good night xxx
