Hamsters fur lost around ear.

Hello! I have a 2 year old male dwarf hamster. I have a concern about his fur loosing around his right ear. He's scraching it, and sometimes a fluid coming from the ear. It also gives unpleasant odor. The left ear was like this also, but it went normal by itself. Could it be his diet? Or is it something else. Thanks.

Hello Kayne and welcome to the forum. I would get your hamster a vet appointment as soon as possible. The skin looks sore and it sounds like an ear infection.

Hello. Sorry to hear your dwarfie has this problem. Agree with Rainbow that you will need a vet to take a look at it. They do start losing some fur as they get older and often behind the ears is one of the first places you can see that. But if there is fluid coming out and unpleasant odour, then yes it could be an infection and he might need antibiotics (baytril). It could also be sore and painful so the vet might prescribe metacam as well (anti inflammatory and pain relief). Has he been scratching the area at all? You might want to check his nails as well. Sometimes when they're older their nails get a bit long and they can cause a sore area when scratching or grooming.

If you don't have a vet at the moment, then google an exotic vet in your region - they know more about hamsters. A consultation isn't that expensive. If he needs meds, that would be extra.

It does sound as though the scratching & fur loss are secondary to an ear infection, the ear is probably painful & irritated which would make him scratch it & that would cause fur loss.
Ear infections aren’t that uncommon & usually respond to the meds the vet would prescribe, it is important to get him seen as soon as possible though.

i agree and would take your dwarfie to a vet asap to get some treatment for his ailment. He's probably quite uncomfortable and a vet should be able to help him.
