Hello!! I have one male Campbell dwarf hamster named Albert

Hello guys, i'm a new hamster owner. I currently have one hamster and 2 guinea pigs. I have never had a hamster before but I've had a gerbil. The animals are quite similar but, if i have any questions on what to do i'll make sure to post them. I got Albert on April 2 2023. He is a male Campbell dwarf hamster. i don't know his age but im guessing he's about 6-10 weeks old. I adopted, not bought him from Petsmart. I don't have many pictures of him but i'll try to take some. Albert lives in a 115 qt bin cage.

Hello and welcome! He is absolutely gorgeous! A bit smaller than a guinea pig! Just to let you know he is almost certainly a hybrid - a mix of Campbells and Winter White, even if he looks more like a Campbells. Nearly all russian dwarf hamsters are hybrids of the two species, due to decades of interbreeding. Unless they're from a registered breeder who has a confirmed ancestry (and even then there can be mistakes).

Regardless of that - it doesn't really matter as he's still a dwarf hamster and adorable. The only thing to be aware of is that both Campbells and hybrids can be prone to diabetes (some are, some aren't - it's genetic). So it's best to give a sugar free diet, just in case - to help delay any onset if he does happen to have that gene. And if he doesn't then it's a healthy diet anyway! This includes no fruit as well so you might need to find the right hamster mix for him

Don't worry - you probably won't see anything wrong - I am sure he is a perfectly healthy hamster - it's just caution with the diet needed . Most people know when to suspect diabetes due to urine smelling sweet.

Oh my goodness Albert is just the cutest!! I love how he has the white on his mouth! He looks like a little baby bear! What a precious Hamster! I'm really happy I get to see these photos of him!

His colouring is fascinating - with the little white patch on the front of his face. On one of the photos at the top of the page he almost looks like a miniature black and white cat . In terms of colouring and fluffiness.
