Hello, I have adopted a hamster for the first time and I need information on a few things. I bought a running wheel for my baby. After running around for a while it carried sawdust inside and started to sleep in it, is this normal? and why is it doing this?

Thank You

Hello & welcome to the forum.

Could you tell us a bit more about your ham, which species is s/he? And what kind of set up you have for your ham, a photo would be helpful if you have one then we may be able to make suggestions to help.
Does your ham have a house to sleep in? A large enough house with deep bedding underneath is important so they have a safe dark place to nest.
It may be that your ham is putting the substate in the wheel as there isn’t anywhere it feels safe to sleep or it may just be part of the exploring & making changes to a new environment, they do strange things sometimes! Sleeping behind or under the wheel isn’t unusual.
Sometimes very young hams do just fall asleep in odd places too after running around a lot.

How long have you had your ham? It can take them a while, up to a couple of weeks to settle in & it’s important not to disturb things during this time so only make changes to the cage if really necessary & just do minimal spot cleaning so you don’t remove their scent or upset them.

When you say sawdust do you mean wood shavings?
Not all wood shavings are safe for hamsters & they do better with a paper based substrate like Kaytee clean and cosy.

Hello and welcome :) Elusive has said it all really. I'll just add that it does take them about two weeks to fully settle into a new cage and decide where they are going to nest, and scent mark the cage and find their way around. Also the first two or three days it's better to leave them alone to work out what's what - unless they show signs of wanting to come out of the cage. This is a bit tricky if they block the wheel up and it won't spin! But I would still leave it two or three days before adjusting anything :-) It's all best not to do any cleaning out for the first two weeks, while they're settling. There's an article with tips about cage cleaning on the home page as well. You don't want to clean them out too much or they get stressed and even start peeing on things more if all their scent is removed in one go. They're quite clean little things really. The only smelly thing is their pee. Their poops are not really unhygienic (unless they start taking over) - they're like little hard seeds - and sometimes they eat poops as well (which is normal - they have two stomachs and can redigest nutrients from their poops). Rule of thumb is - if you can't smell pee - don't worry about it just yet!

I'm wondering if you have a dwarf hamster as they sometimes like to nest near or under the wheel, as mentioned above. Maybe your hammy loves the new wheel so much they decided to sleep in it. When you first get them, they are usually still babies and don't quite have a proper routine yet either.

But once they find a good place to build a cosy nest they get into a bit of a routine. It can help if you put food out about the same time each day.

If this is the hamster's first night, you might find that by tomorrow they've found a more permanent place to nest! But your hammy clearly loves that wheel!

Congratulations on your new furry friend! It's normal for a hamster to carry sawdust or bedding into its wheel and use it as a cozy place to sleep.
Hello ReisMacand. Welcome to the forum. It would be lovely if you introduced yourself in the introduction section.😀

Hello and welcome to the forum, look forward to hearing all about your hamster as they settle in 😄

I hope all is going well with your new hamster! I see your post was from about a couple of months ago, so I'd love to hear how he/she is doing now!
