Higgins

I'm now having second thoughts :ROFLMAO: If Higgins is going to have to have a cage change, it might as well be to the Plaza 120. So I've ordered the bedding panels to fit that. Then keep bits of Higgins plaza as spare parts for the other plaza if needed. It seems silly to have a Plaza 120 taking up storage space when I need a new cage. It is more manageable than the aura as the door is the same height as the standard plaza - and location of the cage makes a difference too. Where Higgins cage is, is more accessible to get at things. So although it is reaching further with the depth (difficult when I'm having a bad day), the cage is at a much better height than where Tino's is and the location means I can get in a better position to do it. I'll set it up so there's not too much reaching to the back to do too often. Also Higgins uses his house which makes it much easier as just one main area to spot clean.

So that will mean sending the Plaza 100 back when it arrives. Unless I change my mind again ha ha.

Basically there isn't going to be a quick easy option - it would mean dismantling the cage whatever I do.

Also ideally I need to swap their cork logs! Tino has the huge one which is a tight squeeze in his cage. Higgins has the lower one which isn't quite tall enough to use at a ramp (and meant I had the shelf lower than usual). But they will smell of the other hamster. I could air them and then bake them again to remove the scent but then they wouldn't have their cork logs! So what I'll probably need to do is get a new cork log for Higgins that is bigger. Then air and bake Higgins old one, then swap that for Tino's log. I can use the other log as a playpen thing maybe.

I'm supposed to be saving for a holiday later this year ........... I think they can both keep their cork logs for now! I moved Tino's a bit so he had more space and I'll wait to see how Higgins' works with the Cloud platforms.

Nope. Changed my mind again. I'll stick with the new Plaza 100 and have cancelled the bedding panels for the Plaza 120! I don't want Higgins to have a major change and the Plaza 100 is working well for now. And need to keep things simple for myself as well. The cage will be familiar for Higgins and the layout the same. Still in two minds about whether to change the left side a bit for cloud platforms though.
 
You are expert at designing for enrichment, we have our own consultant. I would keep the walk way if at all possible, it's rather fun 🧗‍♂️ I don't think you can go wrong with the Plaza. I still have the Hamster Heaven Socks brought when he moved in, and the rust where he was bar biting is well established. It looks tiny now ⛺️
 
It does look tiny after a plaza doesn't it? :-) The Plaza 100 is a good sized cage and yes I think I'll keep his sputnik and roof run. Which might mean I have to keep the platform for now too.
 
Higgins was great fun last night! While Tino was out in the playpen, Higgins had his first chew stick with food on and tried to drag it into his hoard in his ceramic hide, but it wouldn't fit, so he spent ages getting as much food as he could off it and putting that in his hoard. That kept him busy while I was talking to Tino. At one point, when I was videoing Tino in his mini forage box, I was bent over standing next to Higgins cage. When I turned round, Higgins was sitting right at the front of the cage, behind me, and gave me a hard stare! I took that as - hey I want to be out there too.

After I had put Tino back, I let Higgins out and he also had a Rosewood Ice Cream cone in the playpen (they came as a pair). Well he really made me laugh! Before he tackled the ice cream cone he had a good rollick around and wash inside his snooze cube. I had the camera on the floor of the playpen while he was in there, so caught him really close up :)

Unfortunately I didn't manage to capture the bit where he stuck his head right inside the cone bit of the cone which was really funny. But at the end of this video clip, you'll see what he did with the ball treat head of the cone!

He also had a good long time out of the cage and also spent some time on the sofa and had some handling and cuddles.

This is Higgins with his chew stick in the cage. Unfortunately I didn't capture the funny bit where he dragged the chewstick over to where it is in the video :-) You can see him disappearing into that ceramic hide entrance - all food goes in there.


This is an edited version 2 of the first video above :-) Without me talking, music added and rearranged the clips. Also linked the forum on the youtube video. I think this version is better, but the first version is as it happened and he made me laugh.

Such beautiful hammy memories ❤️ Higgins is quite a force of nature! It's lovely to see young hamsters enjoying life so much!
 
These close up videos of Higgins are wonderful. I really like where he’s coming out of his snooze cube, what an adorable little face and paws. When he rolls the cube over made me chuckle. He’s defo enjoying his cone treat.
 
Aw thank you Zara! Yes I think I'll try that again some time. The main issue is, it's luck if the hamster is in view of the hamster - it's a slightly longer lens than standard so the camera is far enough away it's not in their face - but it has a very narrow field of view. Hence I moved it round to point at the cone after he'd been in the hide, but I wasn't quite sure if it was the right view! So it was luck.
 
Tonight, all Higgins food was still on top of his food plate from last night. This is a first! Usually he pouches the lot as soon as it's out. I was a bit worried for a moment and then I saw the large coconut and raspberry ball from his Rosewood cone had gone. Presumably in his ceramic treat hide - which must be SO full by now! So I'm guessing he ate a lot of it and didn't want his food! He came out as usual and looked fine but rather surreptitious around his ceramic hide where his hoard is.
 
Brilliant videos of Higgins his antics really made me smile this morning he is so entertaining 😍
