kawaiikittle

You can just call me Kittle. Currently my partner and I don't have any hamsters right now sadly. It's been about a year since our last robo hamster passed away - his name was Jarvis. We are now ready to look into adopting another one; we'd rather not buy and choose ones from local shelters but it does limit our choice a bit. I joined to get a bit more info on dwarf hamsters, differences between them as well as identifying them! I am also curious in different set ups/habitats. =3

Hello Kittie and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the passing of Jarvis.

I think it is wonderful you want to adopt and you will learn so much from this forum. 😊

Hello & welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about Jarvis, it’s always sad to lose them.
It’s lovely to hear that you’re ready to adopt another ham & keen to learn more about them.
There’s lots of info here on the forum but if you have any questions just fire away & we’ll do our best to help.

Hello and welcome :-). Fire away if you have any questions. I am so sorry you lost your Robo.

A few things aboit dwarf hamsters. Virtually all of them from rescues or pet shops, are hybrids. That is a hybrid mix of two species - Campbells and Wibter whites. They may look like one or the other - or a bit of both but they are still genetically a hybrid of two species. They may even be sold as a winter white or Campbells but still be a hybrid.

There are some pedigree breeders but they are rare.

The main reason to know this is diet. They are prone to develop diabetes. Not all will but some will - so the right diet can help prevent onset of diabetes so they have a long healthy life hopefully.

They are not as fast as robos - but can still be pretty fast at times! As can all hamsters. Generally I’d say they are much easier to handle than robos.

Despite being small - they have just as much energy as a Syrian hamster and still need as much space.

You’ll see plenty of examples of cage set ups on here - the show us your cages has some.

Do you have a cage already?
