I’m worried

It’s officially been 6 days of owning my first female Syrian. She has been settling in nicely from what I can tell, and she’s absolutely darling. Shes been getting a lot more active and she tends to wake up at about 8pm, and then again at around 12 whenever I turn the lights off.

But the past couple nights she’s been making a lot of noise, and curiosity did get the better of me. I checked on her just to see what was the cause. And I can’t help but notice that she’s been exhibiting stressed behaviors. I’m trying to provide for her the best I can (I’ll provide details down below) but I genuinely don’t know what to do. I don’t want to panic- but I’m honestly kind of sort of panicking.

The cage I have has these sort of holes in the back that go up and down for air to get in. She’s been continuously climbing on her hideouts and jumping for them while also trying to chew them. She’s doing this nightly and for hours on end. Shes obviously stressed out and it makes me sick just thinking about it. I knew that having a female would be difficult, but I definitely underestimated how much so. And now I’m stuck.

I have a 42x21x21” cage. It’s a vista style cage and when I’d originally bought it before getting her, I blew a lot of money on it thinking it would suffice. Now I’m entirely unsure what to do. Is it the cage size? I now know that females require something bigger, but I’m not in a position where I can afford to upgrade. I’ve only had her for a little under a week. I don’t know how to make her happier. It’s not that I’m not financially well off, it’s just the fact that my mother can’t afford an upgrade for something I already have and neither can I.

I’m going to start free roaming her in the next week or so, but what if that’s not enough? I’m so entirely worried. I’m trying my best but I’m so open to suggestions. All she does at night is run on her wheel and constantly try to escape. I have a lot of enrichment in her cage that she shows disinterest in besides for the other substrates and the sand bath. I’m mostly just asking for help here since I don’t know what else to do and I feel ashamed that there’s an off chance it’s just all not enough. I want my hamster to be happy.

This is the basis of my current cage. She doesn’t show interest in chewing up cardboard so I’ve been trying to provide some wood items and hamster safe chew toys as well. She does seem to enjoy that stuff- but mostly during the day as far as I can tell.

Please help and reply with suggestions if you have any experience with this stuff. I’m asking as a first time hamster owner who just wants to do what’s best. Constructive criticism is always great and I’ll try my best to reply to everyone!
