Leo

Leo had his first health issue.

I noticed something odd on his cheek last night. When I picked him up, I was horrified to realised it was a tooth that had grown through his top lip. It looked like a tusk. I feel awful that it must have hurt and I didn't notice, but he's not tame enough to check his teeth regularly.

Amazingly, he was still eating and drinking and hamstering around. No signs of pain but he's probably just stoic.

I called the vet in the morning and he was seen today. They gave him a whiff of gas and removed the tooth. They then gave me the pieces of tooth in a little container for some reason and when I saw the size of the tooth I felt awful.

He's doing ok now but I'll need to check his teeth regularly from now on. The vet didn't say anything about pain relief but he does now have a hole in his lip, so I gave him a dose of Metacam from my leftover supply when I got home.

I just wish I'd noticed before it got to that point 😪

Aw don't worry. It's all sorted now. It might have been painful for a short while when it punctured, but probably not after that. Maybe like a painful mouth ulcer type thing or having your ears pierced but not excructiating - if that makes sense - It will have been gradual. :-) And probably quite recent.

Hamsters are quite stoic generally aren't they, and just get on with things themselves unless we notice.

Really glad he's had the tooth removed now - glad he's still eating and hamstering along :-)

Leo's tooth is already growing too long and curving back into his mouth so it's another vet trip for him. It's only been a month! But this might end up being a regular thing now that his teeth are misaligned. He never seems to have trouble eating though which is good.

I'm considering switching him to a diet heavier in pellets which he might have to chew more with his front teeth, in case that keeps them in check.

Oh no. I do remember when people have had hamsters with teeth that need trimming, that it could end up needing doing regularly. It's good he doesn't have trouble eating. One of mine, the two top teeth actually fell out when he was older - but he still managed to eat!

Glad little Leo is still active, he's so adorable! Maybe give him some new things to chew too?

Does he need to be sedated for each trim? Sunflower seeds in their shells are quite a good form of tooth wearing material I think. I wonder if he would chew on some pieces of hay, for the silicone.

He was sedated last time but that was quite complex as the tooth was so long and growing through his lip.

It's possible they might be able to go without this time, but I'm not sure.

He's not much of a chewer but I'm going to have a look for things he might like such as Whimzees.

I think they do usually give a whiff of gas if doing a tooth trim these days :-)
