Firstly I apologise for the photo I asked my OH to take it and not to get my face in the shot I should have made it clear I only wanted my hands and Pete taken anyway Pete loves my furry dressing gown ! This morning I called his name and he came out of his hide all bleary eyed straight to the cage door I just scooped him up and we sat having a cuddle whether it was because he was still sleepy I'm not sure but he sat for a while then snuggled into my hands against my dressing gown unfortunately I had an early morning appointment so had to return him to his cage after 10 minutes he didn't seem bothered he just went straight back to bed lucky Pete 😀

Just letting you all know Pete has gone ghost he is out during the night i know because he has taken food and the piece of bedding I put on top of his wheel has gone but yesterday after the morning cuddles he went back to bed and no amount of coaxing (smelly cheese and mealworms) brought him out and this morning he is staying well hidden the only thing different is I added extra depth to his substrate at one end and I suspect he is in there as I can see a tunnel opening. A disappointing set back but he will reappear when he's good and ready.

It can feel a bit frustrating but it isn’t a set back, it’s just one of those things they do, he’s probably enjoying the deeper substrate at the moment, their routine & behaviour changes from time to time, no doubt he’ll be out & about soon enough.

I'm sorry that you feel disappointed by Pete displaying perfectly normal hamster behaviours.
Personally, i wouldn't see that as a set back.
Maybe I should have said mildly disappointed as I just presumed obviously wrongly that it would be an ongoing thing for Pete to come out each morning I now have learned to have hopes but not expectations. Good to know its perfectly normal though 👍

They do like to keep us guessing. It's like- go away human I'm busy today. I think sometimes though they are more receptive after having had a day in to wash their hair, as then it's on their terms. It is frustrating though isn't it?

Yes especially when I thought I was making such good progress I think living with Pete has to be on his terms and he is making that quite clear

Our Hams rarely comes out in the day other than to go for a drink then back to bed. If I place something really tasty by his door he’ll potentially pop his head out to eat it. I go to his cage at 8ish every night and then he comes out. Sounds like your doing great with Pete, he’s most likely snuggled up in the extra substrate 🙂

Yes I think you are correct in assuming he's snuggled up in the extra substrate I'm thinking maybe it's given him more sound insulation against normal everyday life going on around him still not seeing him but his food disappears and there are little poos on the top deck

Whereabouts do you put his bit of veg? I sometimes find if they are a bit cosy and hiding away a bit, it gives them incentive to go across the other side of the cage, if you put the veg separately on the other side of the cage. They know where to look for it each day and get in a routine. I started doing that with our first Syrian who NEVER wanted to come out of the cage - and often "nabbed" him on the way back after he'd nibbled his veg - by offering him a tube - or latterly just picking him up. Once he was out he was happy as larry but in his cage he just wanted to be left alone to do his own thing.

I feel you. Our Cinnamon is in a period where he's been a bit more shy even after having come out and had regular interactions with us. Making me have to work more (not every day, just periodically) to get to see or interact with him!
