We all know hamsters pouch things but just wondered if anyone had any particular stories?! Good, bad or indifferent. The first time I saw our first Syrian pouching nesting material I thought he was eating paper! I didn't actually realise they pouched things other than food. But they do (hence the floor needs to be checked before free roaming!). Marbles, lego, whatever. They are not that selective when foraging out of the cage.

I've noticed they don't seem to do the full pouch thing until they get a bit older. Raffy has only just started doing it since about age 8 months. And some baby hamsters don't learn to pouch at all straight away.

The funniest one I can remember was Newt, who couldn't quite pouch a bone shaped hand made biscuit although tried. He cleverly chewed at it till it was in two halves then stuck one half in each pouch.

I had to laugh at Rodney the other night. He's a bit dotty now, pouched a lot of food, walked to the edge of his house roof to step off but over balanced when gravity took over and fell off.

I laughed and he chirped at me, clearly annoyed, then stomped off into his house.

Aw! I think they do sometimes forget they have full pouches. Raffy gets things back to front sometimes. He can't resist pouching food scattered about and he can't resist wanting to come out of the cage and sometimes he wants to do both at the same time. I say to him - wait till you've emptied your pouches before coming out. But eventually give in and let him out. He then looks a bit "duh!" What am I going to do with my pouchfuls. And wants to go back in the cage again and then empties his pouches!
