I am making a thread for random non-health related questions about hamsters.

My first question that I had...

Do hamster sandbaths need a cover? Does it make hamsters feel safer while bathing? Or does it matter too much? I have a round sandbath in the middle of Dango's cage and also a corner sandbath that I hope he eventually uses as a potty. (I keep relocating his soiled bedding there, I hope he gets the message someday!)

But anyway, the round sandbath does have a lid but I took it off. Dango uses it but do you think he would he prefer having a lid with a hole to cover it? I was just curious if it mattered that much.

My little Albert loves his sand bath. He likes to have some cover for privacy and he uses the cover to sit on and jump off into the sand. Albert loves jumping. IMG_20230425_171812509.jpg

It's probably better if each person starts their own thread to ask their own questions :) . Otherwise this one could get complicated with people trying to answer more than one person and conversations losing track. But it's a good idea for you to have a thread where you want to add the occasional question and have the answers all in one place, and that will be useful for others to read too at various times.

Orko has a sandbath with a shelf so I thought that was enough shelter but a few days ago I added a hide too and he is using his sandbath even more. 🙂

I do think robos like a part covered sand bath. I have one that has a part roof. The Rodipet one for robos - I really love it. It was an unnecessary purchase at the time but I really liked it and both our robos have loved it too.

I don’t know what Russian dwarfs prefer and Syrians will vary hugely. Most of ours have not been interested in a sand bath and just fill it with bedding! But I think most hamsters enjoy a bit of overhead privacy. As long as the part roof doesn’t restrict their movement too much. Ie if the roof is a bit low for a Syrian.

This one is only big enough for a Robo though. But the roof is also handy to stop sand flying out of bars (in a barred cage)

I have that one from Rodipet too, my Chinese like it, don’t think I used it with any of my Russains.
The Hagen bird bath is probably my favourite, or my hams favourite.
Getzoo do a nice big one with a cover too but I thought the cover was way too low & glued dowel pins all around one side so it was higher.

It would be great if you put a tutorial on here.🙂

The Hagen bird bath looks so cute :) And inexpensive. That is a really clever idea about raising the lid on the Getzoo one. That was always my concern that the roof might restrict their movement. I don't think I'd like banging my head on the roof while having a bath :ROFLMAO:

You got a real conversation going there Zenshii :) It's a good topic. If you have some more ideas like that with a thread for each topic - it would be great to see them!
