I've discovered a way to make really easy shelves for the Savic Plaza - no tools or DIY skills needed!
You will need:
- Anika Living Wooden Corner shelf - from Amazon or B&Q. This comes in two sizes, 19cm or 28.5cm. Although the Amazon says it's painted, it is in fact untreated pine wood, so safe for hamsters. This shelf conveniently comes with one corner cut off, which makes it a perfect shape for the Savic Plaza and possibly similar cages such as the Criceti.
- 4x M2 threaded bolts, at least 25mm long, such as these. B&Q do a hardware "pick and mix" instore where you can buy bolts and other hardware in small quantities. You can use slightly larger bolts if you have access to a drill.
- 4x washers
- 4x M2 nuts or wing nuts, or the right size for your bolts
- Non-toxic glue. PVA craft glue works perfectly for this.
- (Optional) Drill and drill bit matching the size of the bolts you have available
- (Optional but recommended) Non-toxic wood paint or varnish, such as Plastikote, and a paint brush.
1. The shelf comes with two wooden brackets with two holes drilled in each one. If you are using bolts larger than M2, you will need to drill through these holes to widen them with an appropriate sized drill bit. If you have M2 bolts available, you can skip this step.
2. Glue the brackets to the shelf as shown below:
Wait for the glue to dry.
3. If desired, paint the shelf. I do recommend painting at least the top surface to protect it against urine.
4. Insert the bolts into the holes in the brackets, pointing outwards.
5. Use the washers and nuts or wing nuts to install the shelf in your cage as shown:
