Palm trees, fake swimming pool with little chairs and tables, maybe very light and stable safe greco-roman statue miniatures. I'm skeptical about just using whatever random materials aside from cardboard and glue. So what would you use for the pool? Little chairs and furniture?

Some resin items for reptiles are ok for hamsters - although you have to check them for sharp edges (often underneath). But that means buying something. Eg something this for a pool? For the blue you could maybe use blue carefresh.

You could also check out dolls house furniture, although some is too small. It also needs checking for trap gaps like small holes or slats - hamsters will try and stick their heads through things that are too small or could get a foot caught. Or make cardboard ones? :)

Like this thing? the bigger hole looks fine but he seemed like he was trying to squeeze in the smaller ones and it just felt dangerous. immediately removed.

What are those balls called? :

I'm not sure those coloured balls would be safe - a hamster might pouch them. For entrance holes they need to be minimum 5cm diameter.

In the uk you can petsafe waterproofing paint in different colours (plastikote enamel paint). Which country are you in?

These videos are something I really do not like. They use unsafe items and force hamsters to do things they do not want to. I would not look at these for inspiration.

I won't. I was skeptical. Too many materials and colors. But I like the tile wall/floor, can I get something like that?

No I don't think it's available in the US. You'll need to stick to hamster appropriate products. Bedding is quite important for them to dig in and walk on in a cage so they can have natural behaviours, so coloured bedding would be your best bet. You can get pictures like aquarium backgrounds, that can be fixed at the back/outside of a glass tank too :)

How about just concentrate on getting the essentials and then in the future you can save to create a theme? I say this because a theme could cost you a lot more money.

That is a point as well :-) But I guess a bit of creativity along the way does no harm, if planning a set up for a new cage :)

I'll focus on keeping simple. What are sprays for? should I make getting some hamster plants a priority?

Sprays are a form of enrichment. Hamsters enjoy eating them and it can add shelter to a cage.

Personally, I would try to get the essentials first. The cage, sand bath, sand. It helps to put a sand bath on a platform to avoid a hamster getting squashed if they tunnel under it.

When it comes to you buying things you may like to ask on here if things are suitable just to make sure. A sand bath can be something like a dish from the dollar store. You dont have to get an expensive one.

I wouldn't get live plants no. These are the kind of sprays you can add. They are dried and safe for hamsters, plus they nibble the millet etc off them. They make the cage look attractive too.

This is a really good selection and has flower forage as well. They should last a long time. By the way, anything like sprays, hay or hamster food - it's a good idea to freeze them for a week first - if that's possible. Just in case they contain tiny mites or moth eggs (moth eggs aren't visible).

It's mainly the moth eggs with hamster food - most pet food contains moth eggs and they can hatch out in certain temperatures.
