I like barred cages for many reasons and the 100cmx50cm Savic Plaza has a big front door but unlike the smaller Alaska, it lacks the for me essential, top door.
So i decided to add one.

First of all i sourced a free, tank type, small cage with a top door off Gumtree.
The tools and materials i used are a wire cutter tool, an electric drill and a dremel with a plastic and metal cutter attachment disc and a metal file attachment.
Cable ties and the optional decorative duck tape. Ruler and marker pen.

I cut out a panel with the door using the dremel with the pvc cutting disc.

I cut the top bars of the Plaza using a wire cutter and dremel with the metal cutting disc then filed any sharp edges using the dremel with the metal file attachment. The opening needs to fit the door panel of course.

I put the door panel on the opening and marked the holes needed to attach the panel to the cage with cable ties then drilled the holes with the electric drill.

I added decorative tape and cut it to size with a stanley knife because it looks nicer.

I then attached the door panel to the cage with cable ties and snapped the ends off with the wire cutter.

Addin20221016_115502.jpg20221016_115207.jpgg a big top door made setting up the cage so much easier. The door opens and closes quietly so i can do little jobs in the cage without waking the hamster.

Another modification i made to my Plaza is by adding 3 acrylic panels on the inside of one side to stop the substrate from falling out. I was then able to create a burrowing area.

I had an acrylic panel in the shed so measured the required size and cut the panels with the dremel using the pvc cutting disc. I smoothed any edges with fine sandpaper.
I then held the panels to the cage and marked the holes for the nut and washers to go. Drilled the holes with the electric drill and attached the panels 20221016_114939.jpgScreenshot_20221016-114617_Samsung Internet.jpgScreenshot_20221016-114603_Samsung Internet.jpgusing the short bolt, a washer on each side and a wing nut.

That is so impressive! I think you are the diy Queen :) . And a very lucky hamster to have that home. The bedding panels are a great idea. I’m particularly impressed with the top door.

This both imaginatively and skillfully done🤩 I love it! 💜

She's clever isn't she? :)

Thanks but it's more about having the right tools for the job and the confidence to use them.
It started off by me wanting to make a bin cage but my OH took over and i ended up handing him the tools. I got mighty miffed over that and waited until he was away for a couple of days then made a bin cage all by myself. I had to show him that mine was as good as his but then had a bin cage too many, sold it at cost to a young lady who run a rescue, one thing led to another and many rescued hamsters lived in bin cages made by me until they found their forever homes.

I still think it's clever :-) Just not to make mistakes!
