Second chance hamsters

He’s so fast, I think he looks really happy, just rushing about hamstering and enjoying life.

I think I’d leave the tubes if possible as he does seem to like them. If he was to start hoarding in them or making a nest, are they easy enough to empty each time and perhaps he’ll hopefully get the message they are not for this purpose. If he starts sitting in them all the time then yes, I agree it’s time to move them on or try and shorten them perhaps to put him off doing it.

I can’t really advise on this one as I still have a set of tubes in Hams cage 🤦‍♀️. He was so upset and stressed as a youngster when we took all the tubes away as he was living in them and the HH loft part, that I crumbled and just put a section back in at the rear of his cage. In the early days he’d take bedding up there which I’d remove each time and he stopped after a while. Even now, he still enjoys sitting up there sometimes eating food, so I feel we kinda compromised, if there is such a thing wt a hamster. It’s more my way or the highway isn’t it.

Yes, i know what you mean by compromising with a hamster, lol.

The tubes are easy to take apart for a clean. I can remove the section he sits in without having to remove the rest so his smell would never be completely removed.

When i first saw him sleeping in there i was worried about him going to nest in there which isn't going to happen because he runs through the tubes. That only ocurred to me afterwards.

I think that as long as tubes are easy to clean that are fine as an enrichment.

Toby jumped out of my hand while i sat on the floor by his cage. It wasn't part of the plan to let him loose in the hamster room so i'm hoping that he'll run out to the hall.
Things don't always go according to plan round here.

It's not easy to get Toby out of his cage. He's too fast to scoop up but i tricked him into a tube with sunflower seeds and let him out on my lap. I tried to scoop him up to get him used to handling but he jumped and legged it. He wasn't scared. He just likes to run, very fast.
Of course hamsters never do what you would like them to and he didn't run out in the hall.
I sat on the floor and watched him race around wondering how to catch him. All i could do was wait until he run out of steam which took a while.
Once he slowed down and was near me i cornered him with my arms and body and managed to scoop him up.
I can scoop him up, pick him up and stroke him. He's not scared and doesn't nip but what a job trying to catch him!

Toby spent some time in his tube during the day yesterday and there were a lot of seed shells in his tube.
This morning the tube was clean!
Do i have a hamster who tidies up after himself?!
Now, that would be a first in this house.
