Hello

I noticed that my dwarf hamster sleeps half in the open after I bonded with him outside his cage. It is the second time this has happened. Everything goes great he is very social, not scared, eats out of my hand ... very easy. Then when i put him back he always lays down in a certain spot half out of his tunnel with his eyes closed. During the day he sleeps inside his little house. If I punt my hand again in his cage he is very alert and always comes but still it is the second time he shows this behavior.

Is this something to be concerned about? Does this mean something?

ps: i just checked on him (15 min later) and he is active again....

It all sounds perfectly normal to me :-) Sometimes they doze off in various different places. Also if the weather's a bit warm they sometimes sleep out in the open or in a sand bath.

There can be a few reasons hamsters sleep in the open: they're content and feel safe enough to sleep in a vulnerable spot, it's too warm and they're cooling down, or if they're a new ham (especially from a pet store) they're not comfortable with a burrow yet.

Sounds like your little guy is just happy and not afraid to sleep above ground.

Hamsters are quite good sleepers and if it's time to sleep, they generally will, as long as they feel it's safe enough 😴
