On reading the replies on the post regarding Raffy and slugs I also recently started get silver slug trails mainly on the door mat but also slithering onto the kitchen carpet but can't for the life of me find any slugs or figure out how they are getting in it's a close fitting Upvc door and the can hardly dash in when it's left open can they also the trails don't seem to have a start point they appear in the middle of the rug just wondering how common this seems to be.

I get the same trails in my hall, they can’t get in the around the door (made me laugh imagining nifty slugs dashing in quick!) but there are tiny gaps in places around skirting boards where I think they might be coming in, it’s surprising how small a gap they can come through.
I think when you see those little trails & there’s no slugs to be seen it might be the really tiny ones & they just seem to desiccate & vanish.
Sometimes if I’ve been out in the garden I’ve managed to bring the odd one in clinging to my shoes, just as well I always change my shoes at the door after being out there!
If all you see are tiny trails I really wouldn’t worry about it, I doubt any slugs have got any furthere.

Hi Jain. I hope you're not worrying about Pete eating a slug :-) After Raffy did. I am wondering if this is a year for slugs though (like you get years for ladybirds) as I saw three near together in the kitchen one night and I thought - eek are they breeding. But I didn't think they'd go beyond the kitchen.

I also had a slight trail on the lounge carpet, not far from where the slug was the other night, but I assume it came from that one. I don't think trails are to worry about really although it does show that one has been there.

Thankfully they tend to only come out very late at night/very early hours of the morning and your Pete comes out during the day doesn't he?

The one thing it's best not to do, with a hamster around, is put slug pellets down. Don't worry if you have, but apparently the slug will contain poison if a hamster ate a dead one that had had slug pellets. I think this is highly unlikely as you would see a dead slug and have removed it.

My Grandma used to put salt down (I think across the doorway) but that wouldn't be good for hamsters either! I decided to just do nothing because it tends to be only certain times of year.

I think slug pellets are no longer legal thankfully.

If you find a tiny gap where they’re coming in & the hamster isn’t going near there you could put salt down but it gets very messy!

O
Interesting replies thank you I hadn't thought about those really tiny black slugs but that's most likely the ones as the trails are so fine. No worries about Pete though as yes he is a daytime lad and his roam room is the conservatory the only place I can make safe.

I think it's a very random, unlikely thing to happen! A hamster eating a slug :)

Just happened to be a slug in the living room as well! Never known them venture beyond the kitchen before.

When we had a cat, I think they used to come in through the cat flap (and they used to eat the cat food). Even without a cat and cat flap, we still get very small ones occasionally and I'm not sure how they get in!

No cat flap here but it is a very old part of the house (the kitchen and back door area) - still don't know how they get in though! Unless it's through holes where pipes go through the wall maybe. The ones here are big fat ones! 🫣 (Sorry!) The one in the living room was medium sized.

I had a quick google and apparently they do go for pet food.

Someone was telling me just the other day that they were getting in & eating his dog’s food!
The baby ones can get in the tiniest of cracks or holes & even the big ones can squeeze through small gaps.

With all the bird feeders I have on my door I was getting loads of slugs all over it (on the outside thankfully) but now I have a hedgehog coming to the door for food too and most of the slugs are gone.
