Socks: Mouseworks Dynamic Cardboard Redesign and Basic Tunneling

Socks: Since the last clean (aka nest trashing) I've changed things around in my MCH (multi chamber house). Now Mom can get at the toilet area without ruining my nicely constructed nest.
Mom: Socks uses the front room furthest from his nest as a toilet, right in the corner, and it's easy to remove soiled bedding without intruding on his bedroom or larder.
Socks: I packed the adjoining room at the back with my hoard very neatly. I left a trail of bits of food outside it in case Mom is looking for a snack. It's quite accessible and you can get bits of food out without pulling all the bedding about. I have another small bed in the entrance area as an alternative to my bedroom.
Mom: Socks is so organised! Hamsters are so clever!

That's great news :-) They are clever aren't they. Raffy moved his toilet area to the opposite end of the house to his nesting area also. All my others used to use the room next to the nest, where the toilet fitted.

Thank you! When I give Socks something really nice in his veggies bowl, like a toast crust or cooked squash, he leaves one of his Dreamies behind, maybe a thank you ❤️

It's very cute! I hope you say thank you! :ROFLMAO:

Mom: I'm worried that the noise of Socks' newish wheel will disturb the neighbour's sleep. It wobbles when he runs on it, taps against the support stand, and as it is large and hollow, sounds like drumming when it does so 🙁
Socks: I was having a nice mid morning (3am) run on my new wheel, the Trixie (from eBay). I was getting on great, making lots of noise 🥁 and getting fit while having fun!
Mom:I had to gently stop the wheel as it was too loud.
Socks: Then Mom took my wheel away and did something to stop the noise. After that that it was very sluggish and alot of hard work to turn 🙁
Mom: Despite the makeshift alterations, Socks strove hamfully to keep running. I felt really bad for messing up his wheel time and training regime.

Mom: I woke up this morning to see how I had tied the latex glove I used for cleaning onto the wheel stand rather clumsily in the night.
Socks: Mom has put my old Rolly wheel back in the cage during the day.
Mom: I didn't hear Socks using his wheel last night. Perhaps he is upset because I took away his new wheel. Oh dear, Socks has trashed another wheel!

Oh dear Socks...back to the drawing board eh? Blossom still has the savic giant rolly which I bought her last year...had no issues with it 🤔😏

Yes, we will use it, at least until I can find a solution to the Trixie. The Rolly can be tightened and adjusted and attached by its clip to the bars.

Yes, Blossom has hers fixed on the bars. I rarely need to adjust it..think I’ve only done that twice.

Pleased to report that Socks was on his Rolly last night and seems pleased to have it back. Mom is pleased too as she doesn't have to do DIY with latex gloves at 3am 😴
Socks: I'm hooked on speed. The new wheel was nice while it lasted 😔

Oh dear - I'm glad he's enjoying his familiar Rolly wheel again :-) It is such a hassle when there are wheel problems. I haven't used the extra large trixie wheel before - maybe it's just a bit too big for itself - in that design. I haven't had a problem with the 28cm one. I started getting silent runners because they were so long lasting and didn't have issues. But then went back to preferring open wheels and got a wood rodipet one which was great (and still works after about 2 years of Raffy using it. Unfortunately they don't make those any more.

I did used to use the Trixie/Karlie wood ones (similar to the PAH one) but also got fed up with those breaking. They tip forward on the joint at some point I seem to remember and then rub the stand and are at an awkward angle. I did have one come completely off the stand after the tip forwards - thankfully there wasn't a hamster in it at the time!

Yes, hamsters may be small, but they give their wheels a good run for their money 🛞
The Rolly isn't tipping forward, I've realised. I thought it was a bit slow, but the Trixie (which was oddly cheap, even for eBay, and might not actually be a real Trixie wheel, is incredibly resonant once it starts to wobble about 🥁
If anyone wants a small bodrum drum, I may be able to persuade Socks to part with it, but I think he was quite fond of it. It certainly got its fair share of being peed on. It is really cute seeing them climb over the barrier on the front. When it started to get sticky (thanks to the glove) Socks had to heave himself into it, which he did without hesitating. ❤️🐾

I couldn't quite follow that :-) What is a Bodrum wheel? Was the glove to tie the wheel to the bars?

I’ve forgotten the spelling 🤭 It’s a nice folk music drum, held in the hand. It is the right shape for a hamster wheel 😉 Socks would happily trade his Trixie for one 😵‍💫
The glove was tied around the metal upright to absorb some of the noise the wheel was making when it wobbled about and knocked against the stand.

Oh I see - you mean he sounded like one! I'd be a bit careful using a latex glove though - in case he chewed it. How about wedging some cork between the stand and the cage?
