What's a groundnut? Sounds so cute though, I love when they pouch bedding

He was up at 4:30 this morning, meerkatting. I gave him a groundnut in a cracked shell and he took it into his main nest and slept for a bit. He was out for longer at 6:30, filled his cheeks and stored his "shopping" in his cellar. He took bits of food from me a strips of loo paper for his bed, had a good drink and went to bed! I don't think he did any bar biting, which is great.
What's a ground nut in a cracked case? 🤔

The monkey nuts 🥜 I bought from Waitrose (aka squirrel nuts) have quite tough shells so I squeeze them between my fingers and the rim of the shell cracks just enough to see the nut inside. Socks finishes the job with his teeth quite enthusiastically, but shows very little interest in nuts that haven't been started. They are basically just peanuts in their shells. They grow along the ground.

Socks was awake at 4:30am today, crunching cardboard in one of his houses 🏘. I dreamed it was a man knocking on the back door, come to ask for a jumper! By the time I got up, Socks had gone to sleep and I wandered around trying to heat some lunch without burning it and sterilising hamster bottles. 🐹 🥜

This is the one we're hoping to upgrade to. 🙏
It's really nice and not heavy. The sides are nice and high (but Socks still tries to jump from boxes, hoping to get over them). The plastic is quite tough, but I have to supervise him to prevent him from chewing them on the sly. Grommit might not chew so much though. If any panels do get chewed you can order them individually. I use the floor in case Socks tries to wriggle underneath a panel as they are quite heavy and he could get stuck and then hurt himself trying to get out again, but you might have a different experience. I think Socks is trying to write the hamster's guide to escaping from anything 🤔

Oh yes, we have those. Grommit bullies them till they open haha

That's good to know, I'm not sure if he'd nibble but I will use the floor too, just in case. Cheeky Socks!

Socks was up after me this morning, carrying a bit chunk of Xmas treat around that he had moved from his nest. I peeked at his nest yesterday, a little cup lined with toilet paper, perfectly round and smooth and just the right size. Hamsters are amazing! He did his shopping and took carry bags into each of his hoards. I stroked him while he was eating and handed him nuts and seeds, and then when I went off to do things he went to bed 🛏🌙❤️🐹

Dinner yesterday featured a special item, newly sprouted sunflower seeds. Socks was delighted with what he had in his paws and ate it all on the spot. He had two (a gradual intro) and discretely dropped the empty bits of shell into his litter. He was up at 4:30am, meerkatting, took a few monkey nuts and then I went back to sleep and he filled his shopping bags and went into his nest to do some gentle crunching. There was a bit of crunching at 6am, but he stayed in his nest, probably the cereal box this morning.

He looked very sweet, meerkatting patiently, and didn't seem to bar bite last night, which is great!

I can watch Socks moving along the Snugglesafe tunnels through the transparent wall of his playpen if I lie on the carpet and look down the tunnels. He spends a lot of time upside down, like a cat playfighting with the tunnel roof, pulling himself along upside down and flipping over, right way up and over again, or just pelts down the tunnel. Seeing him charging towards me at eye level along the tunnel with my face just a few centimetres away is quite intense. He gets quite psyched up, again a bit like a cat. I think he enjoys defending his tunnel from imaginary intruders and practising fighting.
