Hi all!

Just looking for any suggestions or advice regarding what would be best to do with Mr Maggie during some renovation/building work which will be taking place soon here.

The work is needing done in the Kitchen which is in the room next door to where his cage is, and will consist of knocking through a wall (not adjoining his room) and putting in 2 x steel beams/RSJ things (?!)

There will obviously be significant noise and dust created during this work. 😬

I can seal up the adjoining door as best I can to try and keep the sitting room (where he lives) as dust free as possible but the noise will be considerable and from past experience... dust travels so I'm not sure if it may actually be better for him if we move his tank back up to our bedroom while the builders are here? I know moving rooms is stressful and would not do this if I could safely avoid it for him. I do wonder if moving his tank would be less stressful than the noise and be safer for him from a respiratory point of view?

(he would be moved back up to our bedroom which is upstairs and as far away from the work site as possible before then going back to the sitting room once all the messy/noisy renovation work is completed)

Thanks in advance for any ideas or thoughts!

I think it would be better to move him to the bedroom yes. The least of the two stressful options probably. However yes dust does travel with work like that - it will go right through the house! Unless you manage to seal a door off. Had to do that once and it worked quite well. So for example if you have a door exiting the living room in the opposite direction to the kitchen (eg a door to a hallway or staircase to upstairs), you could seal that off daily before work starts with large plastic sheets held on by tape. It doesn't completely prevent any dust at all getting through, but prevents most of it getting through. Then it would need taking down at night presumably and putting up again the next day. You'll probably need quite a few plastic sheets and replace them each day.

I hate that kind of work being done and I end up covering just about everything with plastic sheets so there's less cleaning to do afterwards! Furniture etc.

Thanks Maz- that's what I was thinking too.

The door from the kitchen into the sitting room will be sealed over while the work is happening as well as the other door from the sitting room to the stairs which lead up to the bedroom. I should hopefully be able to access the stairwell, and therefore bedroom from the other external door avoiding the work site and keeping doors sealed (however it needs fixed as is swollen shut at the moment... ANOTHER job in the list of things needing done!)

I think we will probably stay at a nearby relatives house for a couple of days while they are working, but will pop in to see to Mr Maggie obviously. Will hopefully mean dust can be slightly more contained and will just be easier and safer for the kids to be out of the way... plus we wont be able to use the kitchen at that point!

Needs must but I am DREADING it.

It'll all be over soon :-) Last time I had something like that I boxed up all the its and bits of things in the room so I didn't have to dust/clean them all 😂
