Booji

I just noticed yesterday that there was a small cyst thing on my hammy, Booji’s eye. I have attached some pictures of it. Is it going to be a serious health problem?IMG_1374.jpegIMG_1373.jpegIMG_1370.jpeg

Hi. Sorry Booji has this. It looks like a little warty thing. But I think you do need to get it assessed by a vet with it being close to his eye and also to see if it needs any treatment. It might go away with antibiotics if it is infected. How old is Booji now?

An exotic vet is best as they know more about hamsters. Whereabouts are you? In the Uk?

Booji is about half a year old, and yeah, I’m in the uk

booji is about 7 months old, and we’re in the uk

I think that I may look at a vet in pets at home, as it is the only one that I know of

Aw he's not very old then. It may just be a slight infection. If you google exotic vets in your region and find the nearest one, that is the best option. The cost is no different to any other vet, but they will have at least one vet with exotic training, which includes hamsters. Surprisingly, general vet training has very little involvement with hamsters. Exotic vets know a lot more about hamsters.

I would try googling first - there is probably an exotic vet in your area :-) You can then phone them and ask how much it is for a consultation. It's usually between £30 and £50.

Ok. Thank you. I’ll look into that

I don't think Vets for Pets are any cheaper :-) I've heard good and bad reports of them. My exotic vets has a separate waiting area for small pets like hamsters and rabbits, which is great - so they don't get scared by doggy smells and barking etc.

the closest exotic vet that I have found is 40minutes away, do you think that Booji would be able to handle such a long car ride?

I think that would be fine :-) My vet is an hour away. If you're travelling by car then have the hamster in a pet carrier (guinea pig size) half filled with bedding, a little house of some kind (cardboard is fine - eg a cut up tissue box), some food and a piece of cucumber for hydration.

Then wedge the pet carrier in where it can't move - eg between front and back seats. I also put a blanket over it so it's dark. They often just go to sleep :-). If you have someone traveling with you, they can hold the pet carrier on their knee, with the blanket over the top.
