This is not a new story, it's from a few years ago - but it is not that uncommon a story! Hamster escaping from a cardboard box in a car after collection. It seems quite unbelievable that pet shops actually suggest taking hamsters home in a cardboard box! The boxes are usually quite small as well. So first thing on the list for any prospective hamster owner should be a pet carrier!

Quite a nightmare. The family and the RAC were brilliant though in getting Houdini back. Glad he's safe now, happily chewing cardboard in the safety of his cage 💜

I've known someone to transport a hamster on public transport in one of those paper gift bags...

I completely agree that a proper plastic carrier is an essential. Don't wait until there's a vet emergency and you're scrambling to find something at home to put the hamster in!

I wonder if the insurance paid out, it must have been one of those odd insurance claims statements: "My new hamster chewed up the wiring and we had to be towed home" 🐹🚗

I hope the hamster was ok! He must have been quite scared - although a bit of an adventure.
