Higgins

Happy gotcha day Higgins! He looks like he is having a ball, I love the picture of him in his tube. Are Syrians calmer than Winter Whites? He looks so relaxed, not a care in the world. Must be one happy little guy

I wouldn't call him calm to be honest 😂 He is very "darty". Unlike Tino who is the more relaxed one. But yes generally Syrians are a more relaxed species, with exceptions. They are not slow, but generally slower and more manageable than dwarf hamsters, if that makes sense. In some ways (some might disagree with that!). They can be quite sensitive and easily stressed though. Maybe not as boisterous in personality as dwarf hamsters. I have never actually had a winter white so I can't compare really.

They are a nice big handful! I would love to have a russian dwarf hamster, but I'm apparently very allergic to that species. Never had a problem with Syrians or Robos.

Higgins a couple of nights ago with his nearly bald carrot cottage. He also had a good romp on the sofa. I had a video of that but I seem to have had my thumb over it so nothing came out!

Yes, I was about to say his coat is looking nice and plush. Sorry about the sofa footage, it happens 😐 It must have been a nice romp 🤗. His colour looks lovely 😍

Such a cute pic. He's like a big meatball.

Aw thank you :-) He was out again and I have a video but haven't processed it yet. He continues to be funny and "darty" - such a character. Meanwhile Tino meanders around like an even bigger meatball and is never in a hurry.

I have to post a video or photo of Oaky soon. She's quite a chonker now after having been such a tiny thing a year ago.

Higgins really wanted to come out tonight, but I had Tino in the playpen while I was cleaning his cage. Which took quite a long time. Higgins then disappeared from the edge of the cage where he had been giving me looks, and into his house and started making really loud banging noises :ROFLMAO:

When Tino was popped back in his cage, I went to let Higgins out in the playpen for a bit but he wouldn't come out of his house then. So he'll have to wait till tomorrow :-)

Oaky has not been coming out early at all recently, so she's been missing out on opportunities to come out!

A bit of a tantrum taking place? Perhaps he used up his energy kicking things ❤

Higgins was out for a long time the night before last - playpen and sofa. He spends absolutely ages nibbling that carrot cottage (which is looking a bit bare!) His little face at the end of the video :-) Excuse my silly voice at the end!

Higgins had a half cage clean last night - except for his large ceramic hide at that side, which I left alone as it was clean inside. It looked like a second nest and hoard inside it - savvy hamster!

He is in incredibly neat hamster in his house, but had pee'd on his hoard in his house unfortunately - it was ready for a prune anyway, but I had to remove most of it. So replaced it with some extra food. He still has a hoard in his round ceramic hide as well.

I still haven't got round to replacing his back panel on his cage and his wheel - so he still has the trixie wheel - which isn't ideal and makes spot cleaning difficult. It stands on the substrate but is tied to the bars.

If anyone remembers, two of the back bars are broken (it's my oldest cage) which I discovered when I was going to replace his wheel with one that attached to the bars. So as a temporary fix I covered those with a perspex panel to secure the cage and left the trixie wheel in.

So the intention, next time he had a proper half clean - was to do the whole lot - replace the back bars with some from another cage and change the wheel - but that was going to take a lot longer and mean taking shelves out etc, and the clean needed doing - so just did the clean. Maybe eventually he'll get a new wheel! I have the wood rodipet wheel I was going to replace it with but then I lost the washer from the back for that, so it got delayed again! Have now found another washer that does the job. But the cage bars won't support the wheel until that's done.

Meanwhile Higgins is quite happy with the way things are but the trixie wheel gets blocked up regularly and easily so constantly needs checking!

Higgins himself was in the playpen while I was doing this. He was ok for about 20 minutes in the playpen but then wanted out - he's never in it longer than about half an hour usually and then wants to go back to his cage. I had to leave him longer until I'd finished, so eventually he just went off and investigated a bit more and is quite funny with the cardboard multiroom house (you'll see it moving on the video). So last night he was in it about an hour and a half and maybe he could tell I was doing something to his cage and he was getting a bit bored and started chewing the carpet. But once back in his cage, he seemed to approve :-)

I managed to save most of his nesting area and he had packed the house full of bedding in every compartment and managed to save most of that. He had lots of treats scattered everywhere and seemed very pleased about that :-)

So I video'd him briefly when I sat down waiting for the cage base at that end to dry.
