Higgins

Aw thank you :-) He seems to enjoy being on the sofa more than being in the playpen - he's very skitty in the playpen. But he has started looking longingly at the floor! He can't free roam yet really as I can't guarantee he would come back. Needs a bit more work on that!

Ah yes, it can be a struggle to get Fifi back after free roaming! Higgins is so cute 🥰

Yes, Fifi occasionally comes out to free roam in the living room. She loves playing on the sofa too 🙂 Does Higgins know the sound of food? Both of the girls do 🤣

I'm not sure if he knows the sound of food but he knows the sound of me :-) I suppose I start talking as I approach the cage. If Tino hears me talking to Higgins he makes a big fuss!

Higgins arrived today and is just under 7 weeks old (he's 7 weeks old in 2 days time). He's a yellow Syrian hamster and seems quite friendly and curious.

Here he is in his pet carrier today when he got home

He's in a standard Savic Plaza with just under 6 inches of bedding at first as he's just come straight from sharing a cage with his boy siblings, so it's his first taste of independence and I'd like to suss out his personality as well. He's already done a bit of digging. I can add more substrate later.

I decided to do a roof run as my previous Syrians have always loved that - it's somewhere else to go. It was a bit of fiddling about when setting up the cage, making sure there was access both ends and shelves were in the right place and everything was secure.

Here he is exploring the cage when he went in this afternoon. He's explored almost all of it and managed to squeeze himself behind the wheel and climb up a bit behind it but then carefully climbed down again when he realised there was a roof. He managed to squeeze himself in the small gap at the side of the house, after digging under the house and popping up next to the wheel. He had a bit of a shock when he found the bowl of water had water in :) He also sat and nibbled one of the sprays. You'll notice some of the bars have gone a bit rusty but there is perspex on the inside covering those rusty bits :)

He's been out quite a few times this evening doing more exploring and that was captured on the Hamstercam so more videos to follow. I love him already! He has such a sweet face and slightly brave cheekiness about him.

He is adorable. Love watching him explore. He's so inquisitive.

Today is Higgins gotcha day 😊. Can’t believe it’s a year since we picked him up. So he’s 1 year and six weeks old now. It’s also a family birthday so it’s been a bit hectic but I’ll see if he emerges tonight for some fun 😊. His presents have been delayed so aren’t here yet so he can have those in a couple of days and will get some extra treats and half a sunflower head tonight 😊

Higgins says thank you :-)

He was out for a long time tonight. And very active - not in the mood for sitting still or being stroked! We had had an Indian takeaway earlier for a birthday so gave him a little bit of leftover poppadom which he really went crazy for! After which he gave me a little nip when I tried to pick him up! But my fingers probably smelled of poppadom. He then had some time in the playpen. He has ignored that wheel in the playpen for months now and I decided to put another bit of poppadom in it to try and tempt him it. He at least sat in it to nom. But did come back to it again later. I was so pleased to see him enjoying running in it. He's tended to be skitty in the playpen recently and not interested in anything but he seemed to be enjoying it tonight and full of energy. Tried to climb up my skirt 😂 . Back on the sofa for a bit and then back to his cage where he had a quarter of a large sunflower head. Which he spent ages completely demolishing. Tino was actually out free roaming while I was videoing Higgins in his cage after Higgins had been out. I always said I wouldn't have two syrians at the same time again! They both need attention at the same time! They were both out for a long time each - I'd like to given them longer but they have to take it in turns :-)

So some videos. The first one in the playpen. The second one he is back in his cage and filling his pouches very full! The third video I used my proper camera to get closer without being in his face. He had come back to the sunflower head for second sittings and sat listening for a while and looked up a couple of times. He ended up with a black bits of the sunflower head up his nostrils 😂 It goes out of focus briefly a couple of times but only for a second or so. He was too fast to get much of a photo tonight but did get a couple of him on the sofa. He climbed all over it. I realised why they were coming out very orange as well - I had a setting wrong on the camera. It had been corrected by the time I did the videos.

It's amazing how well hamsters listen. His attentive expression is so charming ❤ I wonder if it's easier for hamsters to drink with one pouch full 🐾

Thanks all :-) Yes he's technically a "yellow" but he's almost like a light gold colour or even a bit like cinnamon, but has different markings. He shows up a bit better on the carpet than Tino 😂
