I think they might have changed them and you have a newer version as on the Trixie website it is shown the same as yours. No swirly sticker and just
Trixie in the middle.

Here's yours - looks like the latest version and Amazon haven't updated their photo or are selling old stock maybe.

Aw - they don't make a clear one. I think the only clear ones are open wheels - like the Niteangel - and they are quite expensive. Also you'd probably have the same issue - they spin very fast, being silent wheels.

All dwarf hamsters have the same issue with wheels which spin very fast?

Perhaps a lot of owners give their dwarfies wheels that are too small and don't see them being thrown, but take a risk of harming the hammy's back if the wheel is too small. If there is a demand, manufacturers should start designing dwarfie specific wheels that are big enough but don't throw the hamster off.

I think with any open wheel, dwarf hamsters can get thrown. However usually that is only initially until they learn to manage the wheel better and control it. If they keep doing it, they're probably doing it for fun They can be like lemmings sometimes.

Good to know… We’ll keep using this one. And if we get more dwarfies in the future we’ll see. (We just love dwarfies better than syrians)

You can keep the other one in a play area, they might decide they want it again at some point.

My little guy has one of the clear Niteangels and it took him a few days to learn how to slow it down well. I eventually learned he didn't like it, he would stay on his other wheel in the play area for hours. I put them in his enclosure side by side to see which he liked, and it was fun watching him try them both out and decide.

They have their own preferences, and sometimes might want to try a different wheel for a bit. Later on my ham learned he could use the Niteangel as a swing, take a few steps and rock back & forth.

Lady Bobi was so tired after running in her new wheel for a long time and she couldn’t even get to bed in her multi chamber! (after a short nap, she continued running).

Hey! I’m a bit worried about Bobi. In my opinion since some months ago she scratches herself too much… If we get to see her maybe half an hour per day (in different moments) she’d be scratching. At the beginning I thought it was just “normal”. But now I’m starting to think she’s losing hair. But I’m not completely sure. Last time we went to vet in October due to a sty in her eye which was taken off, we explained this and they gave us a “medicine” to deworm her. But the truth is that we weren’t sure about what she has. And I don’t want to stress her due to a full cleaning cage if it isn’t 100% necessary.

I’m leaving some pictures. But I think we’ll take her to the vet anyways. What should we expect from our vet? I mean what kind of exam should they make to her to know if she has something in her skin? (I’m afraid mites maybe…) I have to say that even though it’s an exotic vet, they say things like she shouldn’t have sand bath all the time And all vets in my city say things like they have to eat pellets instead of seeds since they have too much fats, that it is normal that a hamster climbs in a bar cage… What I mean is that they don’t look too much updated with the new researches that have been done about hamsters and they’re proper care… So I don’t know what to expect. But I want that Bobi stops scratching

I’ve even thought it might be because of the Chipsi Classic bedding and we should change to a paper one. But I don’t like the idea is emptying the whole cage if she doesn’t have anything.

It could be an allergy or it could be mites. Hamsters can be allergic to any type of wood bedding. I think I would try changing the bedding first and then see how she goes. If she continues to be the same after 2 to 3 weeks then maybe take her to the vets to check for mites.

Although it means changing all the substrate, that isn't too drastic as long as nothing else is cleaned at the same time - You can leave all her cage contents smelling familiar. She'll be fine with a substrate change after a few days of getting used to it.

Process of elimination is a start.

Do you know any other kind of paper bedding that is good and “cheap”? Chipsi Classic was very cheap… 3€ the big bag. But I wont find any paper bedding in local shops… Kaytee Clean & Cozy is 50€ two bags of 50 L (Bobi’s enclosure is 100x50 cm) would it be enough? Wood bedding cost less than 10€ to fill the enclosure. Any other suggestions that sell to Spain and the shipping isn’t very pricy?

You could try Rat Rations. They sell paper bedding and ship to most countries in the world. You’d have to put something in the basket and go partway through checkout though to see how much the postage is.

Alternatively - do you have a shredder? Some people make their own bedding by shredding kitchen towels (rolls of paper towels).

I had a problem ordering a large package from the UK with customs… So now I try to buy things from Europe. Any other idea of a brand that I can find in Amazon for example?

Besides, if I use a shredder and kitchen towels (I think it’s the cheapest option) will it be optimal for her to burrow? Our girl enjoys a lot borrowing and it worries me that she can’t do it properly

Yes that kind of thing. You can get shredders fairly inexpensively but then you can only use them for about 5 minutes at a time and a 30 minute rest! Which is annoying. I burned our last one out by getting impatient . But you can shred quite a lot in 3 to 5 minutes- especially if it's a roll of kitchen paper as you don't need to keep stopping to pick up paper!

Actually paper bedding is better for holding burrows than wood shavings Although I'm not sure about shredded paper which would be longer pieces.

Kaytee is very good for holding burrows. I noticed Zooplus sell 3 packs of 49.2 litres for 73.49 euros. It says equivalent to 6.3kg. I would think that would fill a 100cm cage when decompressed. Based on the fact I used to get 10kg of Fitch (when they sold it in kg) and used about 2/3 of the bag to fill a 100cm cage. Which is about 6.6kg.

It's not cheap! But - Once you've filled the cage, you would mainly only spot clean for quite some time. I usually go about 4 to 6 months before doing a substrate change, and then only change about half of it and put the clean half back on top (so it still smells familiar). That top half eventually gets spot cleaned out. They have it in white or natural


Might be better to spend money on bedding rather than a shredder, if you don't have one, maybe. On the other hand if that 6.4kg isn't quite enough, it could work out expensive!
