Hi again

I ordered our little hammy this cage:

Now I'm looking for some accessories to fill it with. Also, I would appreciate some advice on a recommended wheel (she's a Syrian).

Thanks!

Ooh she’ll like that. For a wheel - you could get the silent runner 30cm which attaches to the bars (and is silent) - so it doesn’t restrict the substrate or take up too much space. However the wheel is not the cheapest at about £25 and the bar attachments are an extra £5.

An alternator can be to have a small platform on the cage base that a wheel can stand on (then you could get a much cheaper trixie wheel :-). And still have the base full of substrate. The platform would be subterranean really and make a hidey place under the wheel.

There are lots of nice accessories but it can get expensive. For me - I would rather go with a large multi room house with legs - use that instead of the green shelf. And not spend any money on toys but use cardboard items for toys - eg kitchen roll inner tubes, egg boxes etc. they can have just as much fun with those. Or you can paint them to make them look fun.

Or you could use the supplied shelf (which is quite large) and make a shoebox house - which majes a good sized house. Then have something to spend on some good accessories like a cork log or coloured bendy bridges etc.

My favourite places for accessories are Happy Henry Homes and Rodipet. Both have things Syrian size.😀

Thar’s a great cage, she will love it!
I’d recommend the silent runner wheel too, I’ve used them for years now & they are good.
Cork tunnels are great part hide part something to climb on & over too.
The cage is quite high so you could add in some shelves & use a sputnik or two to create more interest on different levels & to make safer higher places to hide out or put food treats etc.

Yes the cage is quite tall so two things. One - to avoid fall risks you need the base full of substrate to cushion any falls - maybe you to 1cm below the rim. Or you can put cardboard inside the bars (I did this and attached the cardboard with cable ties) so the substrate doesn’t fall out. However my hamster chewed all the cardboard off!

Having things like a rat Sputnik hanging next to shelf also gives some overhead cover and somewhere else to go. They sometimes don’t like too much open space above them. Just put some bedding in the Sputnik as it’s quite large and not very inviting otherwise. Our Syrians always loved their sputniks. I have two in mine with a rat tube tied to the roof leading between them. So it makes a roof run. So if you have a budget then maybe go with a shoebox house, a cork log and a Sputnik or two.

For a nice floor toy, Hopes healthy treats sell the hyacinth tunnels. They have holes in and are chewable. The hamsters like the holes. The small size is plenty big enough for a Syrian. A bendy bridge tunnel to go over a house door is good too.

If you’re feeling flush I’d get a multi room house with legs (so it doesn’t sink if tunnelled under) and all the above!

Thank you very much for all the replies. I have lots to think about! :)

There are Plaza set ups on a thread here and you can look at the wheels on the wheels thread to get an idea of their sizes.

My Syrians have the 12in Silent Runner attached to the bars.

Thanks! There seems to be different options (wide, regular). I see them on Amazon, but they're £53. Can someone post a link for one?

Thanks :)

Have a look on ebay. They are often cheaper on their. They also sell them on a sugar gliders website.

The sugar glider site is the cheapest for the silent runner wheel - £25. They were out of stock last time I looked but if you email them they let you know when their stock is due and you can reserve one. It's usually within a few days.

£25.99 actually

This is the bar attachment plate

If you have problems getting hold of one then something like this cheap house can make a good "stand" for another type of wheel It sits on the bottom of the cage with the substrate all around it - provides a firm surface for something like a £12 trixie wheel to stand on. Anything involving hay though, it's a good idea to freeze it for a week first - just in case there are any mites in the hay that could hatch out.

This is the trixie wheel. It's a lot cheaper. It's not technically a silent wheel but they're usually pretty quiet. You might be able to find a way to attach that to the bars (cable ties or something).

Or it could stand on a platform as mentioned above.

I have sometimes had a wheel just standing on the substrate, but the stand tied to the bars as well so it can't fall over or sink if tunnelled under.

Good find Rainbow - it annoys me that they are making extra profit though when the sugarglider shop sell it for a reasonable price. To be honest, it is not my favourite wheel any more, other than it attaches to the bars. Most hamsters are happy with the trixie wheel. My rodipet wheel is great but they don't make the wood ones any more.

The main advantage of it attaching to the bars though is it doesn't stick out into the cage a long way and take up space.
