charlie's (a.k.a ricky rat) thread

Hi! Haven't posted on here for a while.
Here's Charlie, a little bit more grown up! He really enjoys spending time with me and at certain times he stands on the corner of his enclosure for me to pick him up. 😭
He is seemingly really healthy, although I had to remove his house I made for him because he kept getting little wounds on his feet. I've treated it and now it's healed.
Any tips to keep him more busy in his enclosure? He is really not interested in toys and stuff. He just chooses to sleep in his enclosure or sneak around in my room. No really hints of him getting bored in his enclosure though.

Very handsome hammy! 🥰

He's so gorgeous. So the house was the culprit then - which house was it? Maybe splinters?

There are a lot of tips on this thread for home made boredom breakers :-)

I made the house out of ice cream sticks. It was fine at the beginning, but in his smaller enclosure he began chewing on it out of stress or boredom I'm guessing. He stopped after moving to his now enclosure but I kept the house. I don't know how I didn't realize it would give him wounds. My mom came up and told me how the house may have been the issue and I immediately removed it after that.

Thank you for the link, I'll be checking it out! ❤

Charlie is super cute 😊. Defo take a look at the various cardboard creations. I don’t have a hamster at the moment but our previous Ham used to love them with a treat hidden inside. The majority I made with finished toilet roll holders.

Thank you, I'll definitely try that! He loves tearing stuff up. 😅

Hello! I've been busy with studies a lot lately, but just wanted to put a little update photo of Charlie on here.

His outgoing personality continues to faze me! This photo is from a few days ago, him feeding on a piece of carrot. I put a little piece on his head to see if he would notice but he didn't until he digged down in his enclosure to put away all his treasure.

I've noticed that he hasn't been really interested in his chews recently. His teeth seem to be fine, but I'm worried. I'm going to get him some alternative chews soon to see if he likes it better.

He's gorgeous! I'm guessing it's the lighting, but I thought he was white! He looks grey there. He seems to have a wonderful gentle nature if he let you put a piece of carrot on his head :-) Is he still free roaming in your room? He'll love that. It's so good to see how he has flourished in your care, from not being able to use some of his legs when you got him.

He is not white, but a really lighter shade of grey! He has some white fur growing on his stomach (?) though. He also has red eyes that you can see with a flash. And yes, he didn't look up or make a face at me while I was putting the carrot on his head, I don't think he even realized since he was busy stuffing that bigger piece of carrot in his cheeks.

I still let him roam around in my room. Sometimes in the living room, so he has more space to explore. Once he hid some treats under the couch that I didn't see so we had a little bit of an ant raid. 😅

I'm so happy he got better; Not only physically but also in being happy and trusting with me. I didn't know we were going to be besties when I first got him. :')

He's a lovely colour :-) He looks so white on the first photos! But now I look again maybe he does look a bit grey on them. Do you think his coat colour has darkened a bit maybe?

Might be the case! Flesh-eared white syrian hamster's description matches him well, but I can say he is currently more lighter grey than white mostly.

Now that I look back at the photos of him when he first came home, he definitely looks more whitish than grey.

Can getting old cause his coat to darken?

It's possible yes :-) Not something I've heard of before though. Unless he was a winter white dwarf hamster! Which he isn't. Some black hamsters turn more brown in older age and cream hamsters can go more orangey in old age.
