Cinnamon

The past 2 nights we stayed up a bit late with Cinnamon but I think made some really good taming/ bonding progress. We hadn't taken him out of the cage in a few days and found him awake and busy already when we came up to the room for reading/ bedtime. I decided to get our blue playpen out (another member had recently posted about this one). I had stopped using it for Wally because it felt too small for him, but I gave it a try for Cinnamon because I didn't want to take him into our office space on the first night (it was late, I thought it would be a short play session). I think, at least for now, it's actually a better play space for him. He doesn't seem to get bored quickly in it, and he seems a little more comfortable being close to us in that space rather than the larger space. My daughter and I took turns with sometimes sitting in there with him and he occasionally crawled over our legs and generally seemed much less apprehensive of an occasional pet than the first couple weeks. He did finally figure out how to scale the corners of the playpen, but of course we just watched and caught him at the top and lowered him back down again. He didn't seem upset by this; it just seemed to be one of his other options in the play pen (run around the edges; explore the pet carrier; eat a snack; scale the corners, repeat).

He also has become much more comfortable doing his thing at night when we are in the room rather than shyly waiting for us to turn out the lights. He loves his sandbath, which is fun to see because Wally would use the sandbath, but not nearly as much. I love to see how he hasn't gotten bored by it but each night has a lengthy routine with it.

I'll attach 2 videos in my next post of him scentmarking and cleaning himself.

They're lovely videos! Yes that's scent marking in the first one - Raffy did this a lot as well at first but he doesn't do it so much any more. He's clearly listening to you :) He looks healthy and relaxed and had a nice wash and stretch there. By the time he came out of the carrier he looked quite confident and curious about things. He's a lovely hamster. I would keep an eye on him in the carrier (which I'm sure you do) in case he tried to get through some of the smaller holes. They do do some stupid things like that sometimes and think they are smaller than they are.

Thank you for sharing those lovely videos. What a fluffy little cutie! He's gorgeous and starting to feel at home with you. It really just takes time for hamsters to become familiar and confident around their human family. Cinnamon is doing very well and seems quite relaxed. The playpen is a good idea for now and he'll let you know when he's ready for more.

Cinnamon has become more and more comfortable with us. He still has to come out on his own schedule. He'll hear us come up around 9PM and start to poke his head out to look, but even if we offer him food he often grabs it and tucks back into his chamber. However, we just do our bedroom routine and eventually he comes fully out, typically closer to 10PM. For now we put him in our smaller animal playpen, where he runs around, and we sit in there with him and he crawls all over our extended legs, scales the netted walls (and we grab him at the top and bring him back down), and runs around. He is more open to little pets while he's eating or otherwise occupied. We're developing such a regular habit of taking him out for 20-30 minutes at night that I'm more worried about no one taking him out when we travel for a couple of weeks this summer. We'll have someone checking on him, but since he doesn't come out until 10PM, who knows if they'll come that late.

Here are two videos we took recently. In one he has a little basket we filled with food and he is walking over the platform of an old Calico Critter ice cream parlor, and one he is actually foraging from some sprays I had never tried before.

Oh my gosh! I'm so happy to hear that Cinnamon is becoming more comfortable with you! You're doing an amazing job with taming him. That 20-30 minutes is a great amount of time, not too long or short. I think he will start showing himself even more as time goes on!

Gosh those videos are simply precious! I loved watching Cinnamon forage on his sprays! He's so sweet!! And the café video made me laugh and smile! He is so silly and adorable! Thank you for the update!

The videos are adorable. Especially the first one - he looks so cute and funny at times, grappling with the spray. At least he eats them. Raffy ignores his. Tramples on them sometimes though. The second one was fun too :) He really is a fluffy little boy!

This is the 1st time either hamster that I've had has gone after a spray!

I regretted that I didn't have my camera set up fast enough when we set him down. He went after the basket of food (which was set next to the mug of water) so fast that I didn't get it until he'd already knocked it over!
