When Clive looks straight at you he made my heart melt. He looks even more like a mini bear and I love his big ears. Don't tell my Albert but I'm in love with Clive.

He has that effect on me too. We drove a long way to get him out of a bad situation. His little face looked at me from the small ads and that was that. I had to get him and so glad i did.

I'm interested to see if Clive still gets up as early as he used to when Jack was alive. Often enough they both wanted out at the same time and both were impatiently chewing the bars to let me know.
Maybe as the only Syrian he has no competition to reign over the entire territory of a room, hall and bathroom.
Unless Lilly gets up first which he wouldn't know about because she lives in another room.

Yes it’s possible he will be affected by Jack not being there. But then he has the distraction of Eddie being there so he may not be too affected by Jack’s absence. The only time I have had a Syrian seriously affected by another Syrian going was when the hamster died in the cage. I think Pickle sensed that somehow and was really affected. I ended up having to move his cage to another room entirely.
After that experience I would be tempted to move one hamster to a different room before the other one died. If it is looking likely. Different in this case of course because Jack went to the vets.
I had another similar experience with our first hamster after he was left with someone and was fine until the last night when another hamster in the room died and he went frantic and started bar chewing and running round in circles. This carried on for two weeks after he came home to us and only stopped when I did a full cage clean.
But in this situation I think Clive will be ok - but may still be competitive! Or suspicious

Interesting you mention that, Maz. I was in fact considering moving Jack's cage out of the room because i was convinced that Clive was able to smell and sense that Jack was dying.
As it happened, Jack deteriorated further overnight and staying alive had become a burden to him. I don't want to get into details but i knew for sure.
Clive is a very sensitive hamster and sensed my sadness when i spent hours sitting by Jack's cage. Clive sat next to me.
Should Clive be affected because of a scent lingering, a cage clean would be my course of action as well.
As it happened, Jack deteriorated further overnight and staying alive had become a burden to him. I don't want to get into details but i knew for sure.

Yes I wouldn’t normally do a full cage clean but in that situation the stress was so bad and I was guessing it was something to do with scents of other hansters. And it did the trick. It kind of shocked him out of it as well and he went back to normal overnight and didn’t seem phased by an all clean cage and substrate either. He curiously sniffed the bars which still had a faint aroma of vinegar. It was more than just me thing though - not just a hamster dying in the room with him but apparently a female Syrian had got out and climbed up his cage as well - after him! And I did wonder if that scent might be driving him bonkers as well.

The scent of a female can drive the boys crazy. I've had that experience with Rory and a foster hamster. And more recently with Clive and my jumper.
Clive got up at the normal time of 18.30/19.00 and has been out twice. He's been on wheels, had a good rummage in the playbin and came back to me with full pouches. He's in his house now and closed his door. I cleaned his house out because he had run out of space for himself and it was getting a bit miffy so he's stocking up again. He wasn't put out by me removing old bedding and hoard (replaced with new) and left him some treats which he took straight to his house.
I've watched Eddie hamstering about but he didn't want to come out and no sign of Lilly or the Robos.
It's so quiet here and i'm not used to it. It was too busy at freeroaming time when i had four Syrians but i managed somehow. Having only one is weird.
