From what I've heard they can escape quite easily from the barred ones. With the fabric ones you'd have to watch for chewing but playpen time would be supervised anyway and haven't heard of chewing issues really.
Or last hamster would occasionally scale the corners of the playpen, but we were always either in there with him or watching from the outside. I wouldn't leave him unattended there.

Just to say, please feel free to ask as many questions as you like. 🙂

Just bought the 12” silent spinner wheel for Draco! His wheel is VERY squeaky so he needs another wheel (and a bigger wheel)

The silent spinner is very popular and worked well for us too. Let us know if you find it to be a great improvement also.

I did have a question…
Draco doesn’t get spooked by noises, but he does by my hand in there. I went to give him food, and I guess he didn’t hear the cage open, (even though it’s loud!) and he got so scared! I felt so bad :( Im hoping he’s not deaf… The camera I have for him has this loud noise when it comes on and a click when it goes off and it doesn’t scare him. The wheel squeaks badly but it doesn’t scare him. The opening cage door doesn’t scare him even though it’s super loud!

Does he respond at all if you talk to him? You could try just very gently rustling some bedding when your hand is in the cage & see if he reacts to that. It is possible he could be deaf although it’s pretty unusual, if he is he’ll still manage fine just try to make sure he can always see your hand coming toward him & don’t make sudden movements.

The silent runner is popular and people get them mixed up with the silent spinner. I have heard the silent spinner is very noisy.

Okay I will. He doesn’t respond to anything.

It sound like little Draco may be deaf. This is nothing to worry about. I had a rabbit and a guinea pig who were deaf and I found it made them more confident as they did not get scared by noise.

Elusive has given you great tips. Once he knows you are there he should not be startled. :)

The silent runner should be silent. Did you say it's squeaking? If it's not right I'd just send it back and ask for a replacement. Draco is bound to be a bit skitty at first - it can take a good two weeks for them to fully gain confidence in a cage. It's quite important not to clean them out during that two weeks. Just spot clean a pee area once or twice a week (if it's obvious and smells - if not, wait a bit!).

It could just be he's scared of hands - that is quite common before they're fully hand tame, and a lot of hamsters can feel a bit threatened by a hand in their cage - especially if he's still a baby. Our current Syrian was a rescue and he hated hands and would actually bite if you tried to pick him up - I think he had had a traumatic experience with hands previously perhaps.

It may just be a bit of time. Also they can behave completely differently out of the cage than in it.

I actually bought the silent runner (should be here tomorrow!) right now I have the niteangel wheel

Oh sorry I got confused there :-) So you got a niteangel and it was squeaky? You should be fine with the silent runner. The Nite angel one might be good for a playpen, if you can work out how to stop it squeaking! Sometimes a tiny drop of olive oil in the workings does it but I don't quite know where you'd put it with a Niteangel wheel as haven't seen one. They have bearings I think. Or just send it back for a refund.

I was thinking for a playpen! I also like that the silent runner is partly enclosed, because he still doesn’t know how to stop the wheel fully yet and he almost falls out of the wheel as it keeps going!

He'll soon get used to that :)

Is it the Niteangel wheel that is squeaky? I am sorry because I thought you meant the Silent Runner. Niteangel will exchange it for you. Their customer service is fantastic. It could just be a faulty one. My Niteangel wheels squeak from time to time and I just adjust them which seems to sort them out.

Right, now I worked it out. You have the Niteangel Super Silent wheel. I think you may have a faulty one but I am sure Niteangel will exchange it for you.

i’ll look into that! i’d love to use it for his playpen.
