Did they give you any metacam (loxicom) to give him for a few days? They tend to only scratch at a wound if they have pain there. But I suspect he might not as it would hurt if he did.

When is his post op check? They usually do one after 5 to 7 days to check the wound is healing as it should. It does start to heal quite quickly.

Yes, I was given an ointment to apply around his wound for 7 days. But surprisingly, as of today, the wound has already dried up. Gilbert is recovering much faster than I expected, and I'm so glad. When he had the tumor, he was sleeping all the time and seemed very lethargic. Now he's eating with a great appetite, running around at full speed, and is active again, just like when he was younger.

not the vet... the receptionist!

I was also given incorrect information re worming my puppy from one of the admin/reception team (cant remember if it was the same person) but thankfully I was aware of the correct information both times so just politely ignored her...

Think Mr Maggie is the only hamster who has graced this vet practice... and probably ever will

That's quite concerning. They really should do more research before giving advice to customers. But as pet owners, we also need to be proactive about seeking information instead of accepting everything a vet says at face value. If we come across information that differs from what we've been told, it's always a good idea to ask questions and confirm it with the vet.

Even the receptionist yesterday picked up Gilbert's cooling pad and asked, "Oh, what's this? Is it his food?" I was honestly surprised, they seemed so unfamiliar with basic hamster care and didn't know what it was.

It is worrying. It is good to be aware that rodents have different needs to cats and dogs. I'm delighted that Gilbert is healing quickly. Their fast metabolism can work in hamster's favour at times. The vet has done a good job. Gilbert is so cute resting in your hand. Is he eating hay? He is a little charmer

Shoot, I wish I saw this thread earlier. My late buddy also had surgery for a tumor, he didn't need fasting either. I'm so glad it went well, what a cutie!

Hams know when you're helping them feel better, Gilbert seems super tame but I bet he's extra grateful to you. Did they give him any metacam for pain? He might not need it, but it could be worth asking them for. Just like for humans it could feel itchy too

Gorgeous photos Gilbert looks to be doing great I can't even see where it was removed from his ear! They must have done a neat job. Does he need a post-op vet check?
