Hamster has escaped

Have you asked neighbours and put posters up in your neighbourhood?
If there's no trace of him in your apartment and no pipes, holes or vents he could have gotten into, maybe he climbed out of an open window?

So you had the cage on the floor last night and a bucket trap set and nothing in either? And you heard no noises last night? Did you manage to keep the cats confined to one room last night? If so you could confine them to a different room tonight and set the bucket trap today/tonight in the room where the cats were last night. And put the cage on the floor in that room as well. The idea being have the cats in one room overnight with the door closed and all the other doors open overnight.

As Beryl mentioned I have also heard of people in apartment blocks finding a hamster that had somehow got to their apartment from someone else's. In one case it was via heating vent ducts. In another case it was suspected he got through and adjourning external balcony.

People who find hamsters often put notices up in apartment blocks to say they have found one. You could maybe put notices up saying lost hamster, and a contact number in case anyone finds him.

As Beryl says there are often case of people finding a hamster and taking them in and never finding out where the hamster came from.

Apparently you're still 5 hours behind in Canada :). A thought. Have you checked the bathroom and do you have a bath with a panel - they can get behind the bath panel through some small gap at the edge or underneath and sometimes can't get out again. Also sometimes there is pipework going down through the floor there - ie the odd hole for pipework. Similar if you have a shower tray. They can get through really quite small gaps - eg a gap under a door more than 1cm or under anything like that - eg a gap at the side of a bath panel.

Also did you put the bucket trap in the kitchen? In case he was behind the fridge eg?

They can survive up to 3 to 4 days without food and water apparently but could manage to find some liquid somewhere.

Windows all have screen. I had not even thought about posters. Great idea!

Yes I did all that I will try the other room tonight.

When you set the bucket trap put a bit of smelly fresh food at the far end of the ruler or bit of wood. It’s the smell of that that tempts them. Cucumber is ideal as it will provide liquid too and most hamsters like it. If you don’t have that, try hard cheese. And a trail of food up to the top with the smelly food at the end.

I did that still no Dash. I think I've lost him. 😭 I am heartbroken. 💔

I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you. I know how precious he is to you. I am still hoping he turns up.

I am so sorry too. Not a sign of any activity at all or any food gone? Did you check his cage again to see if he’d gone back in? If the cage was on the floor. Do ask neighbours and put posters up in case he has somehow got out or into another apartment. I had a thought - do your cats go outside? If so they could have carried him out. They tend to carry things and drop them again.

Cats are strictly indoor. I went door to door on my floor with a picture. Not sure if he could have gone up. 😞

Hamsters are just hard wired to roam. Their wild instincts kick in when they suddenly have freedom. But they usually want to go back to their familiar smelling nest after a nights roaming - which is why leaving the cage on the floor can work with a ramp up to it.

It’s a really tough time waiting and wondering. He hasn’t left you. He’s just escaped and they do silly things - like my hamster going upstairs and wandering around up there.

If he is in the apartment he will most likely only come out after dark.
Try the bucket trap in one room and the cage on the floor in another room.

Hi guys I will be taking down this thread later on. The pictures and stories are killing me inside. Thank you for all your wonderful advice and trying to help me find my baby. I hope wherever he is he is alive and in good hands.

He may have run out of your apartment to get away from the cats or you would have found him by now.
Hopefully somebody caught him and took him in to keep him as their pet.
It does happen.

That's what I am hoping for

Hi guys, got an update on my baby Dash. He unfortunately was stuck behind my dresser and the wall and has passed away. I am devastated. I loved him so much. 💔💔 R.I.P my Dashie boy. I am so sorry. Until we meet again in heaven because you were my Angel. 🪽

I am so so sorry. What a terrible shock for you. You are in my thoughts.
