Hamster not eating much

Welcome to the forum, your photos of Happy are just adorable. If you’re able to get some paper based bedding, I’m sure he’ll enjoy this. Are you also able to buy any flax or millet seed sprays, most hamsters really enjoy those too and if you offer them from time to time, they’ll add some extra variety for him.
Thank you Zara ❤️ I’ll try ordering them online. It’s really difficult to find Hamster supplies in India as very few of them have Hamsters as pets in India.

It is difficult when things are hard to access. If you can’t get sprays easily, mine managed perfectly well without them for many years 😊. Cardboard is your friend as well - you can make all sorts of boredom breakers out of cardboard.

There’s a thread with some ideas here 😊

Thank you Maz 😊

By the way - maybe you’d like to start a thread for him in this section :-). It’s a sort of personal/diary thread to post about updates about the hamster and photos along his life journey and nice for others to follow too 😊 Your hamster’s personal diary or thread.

Sure, Will do that. 😊

Hi, I see that my hamster’s skin is getting dry and a little flaky. I’m concerned. What can I do? The last time this happened I took him to a vet and he asked me to give him vitamin c drops or multivitamin drops but Maz advised me not to give him that so I haven’t.
Can someone please help me?

He’s losing fur too

Aw he's lovely :-) On that last photo his fur looks ok. On the others, it does look a bit dry. On one photo it looks like he has some fur loss but is that where you've just moved the fur out of the way? Because he looks ok on the last one.

What food does he get? Providing the food has the correct nutritional balance, it shouldn't be a vitamin issue. Also how old is he? Lack of protein in the first year can affect skin and fur (and also muscles).

No he actually has lost some fur. I think because of his diet I didn’t really give him much protein but now I have included egg and walnut and a fresh veg like cucumber and broccoli.
He is around 7-8 months old

I think he’s itching himself. Is it normal? If not what can I do?

Hamsters do scratch a lot normally as part of their grooming. But if you think he has fur loss as well and is scratching in that area, then the best thing is to go to a vet to ask them to check and see if he has mites. To do this they need to take skin scraping and look under a microscope as hamster mites aren't visible to the naked eye. If he does have mites, they will prescribe treatment for it.

There are no good vets here.please could you suggest me what I can do at home?

Mites need vet treatment unfortunately - it needs to be prescribed by a vet. It might not be mites. I was unclear from the photos above whether he had fur loss or not? There are other reasons for fur loss if he does have it and his improved diet will help too. Usually with mites their skin is sore and maybe even bleeding where they have scratched so much and really quite bald patches.

If you can find Ivermectine in a brand specifically for hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice, it might help as it is is a topical insecticide. The formulation has to say safe for hamsters on the box though so that the dose is safe. The brand is Xeno and it might be available online. I hope your hammy feels better soon.

Xeno spot-on may be available to buy. It's not usually recommended as it can be toxic to hamsters unless it's the right thing in the right dose. The idea being that it hasn't actually been diagnosed as mites so you wouldn't want to be giving it unnecessarily. Most vets will see hamsters as well as other animals. Are there any vets at all in your area? It would help to know if it's mites or something else really.

My vet prescribed it for Socks, but she did carefully weigh him and could tell me the exact dose for him. It is better to get it from a vet. She prescribed it without a skin scrape, but did do a visual examination.
