I just got a 4 1/2 month old female Syrian from a breeder two days ago. When I got her home, she was super active all day and very curious about everything in her enclosure. She also wasn’t very skittish when I was sitting near her cage. Yesterday I didn’t see her much until around 11 am, but only for a few minutes. I sat by her cage yesterday night but she didn’t come out. This morning, I went into the room where her cage is and she was out! But me coming into the room totally spooked her, so she ran around her cage and eventually into her hide. She seemed very confident at the breeders and even took food from me and didn’t run away or anything. I just wanted to make sure this behavior is normal since I just got her, and when I can expect her to be more confident and out more?

Hi. It sounds perfectly normal :-) Even if they are hand tame and confident at the breeder's she has had a huge change of environment - different house, different smells, different people, different cage. As opposed to the only house they have ever known. It can take about 2 weeks for them to fully adjust to their cage and then you can start doing out of cage time and hand taming sessions/playpen sessions. In the meantime, it's a gradual process until she is familiar with you - knows your voice and scent etc. So talking to her gently through the cage, offering her the odd treat through bars. Waiting till she shows signs of wanting to come out. After about 10 days she is likely to be visibly more confident in her enclosure.

I've attached our taming article :-)

I have actually found breeder hamsters a bit slower to tame than most! They have only just left the home they were born in, their siblings and their breeder Mum. However she is 4.6 months old so she's a bit older than most baby hamsters and I'm sure she'll adjust soon. It is frustrating at first, but it's time and patience and building trust.
