l understand a hamsters sense of smell and hearing are extremely keen, but how much are those senses affected from outside odours and sounds when they are buried under bedding? Kage's bedding is 7 inches deep and I often get the feeling he is right on the bottom, and I do wonder whether he can hear me when I speak to him, and whether he can sense I am there when all is quiet.

Interesting question. Sniffer digs can smell things that are underwater so hamsters should be able to smell through bedding. Their whiskers are very sensitive too. Sometimes Socks' whiskers will vibrate while I am talking to him

I'm sorry, I didn't know what you meant by sniffer digs for a while. Don't worry about it, I make spilling mistokes all the time and it takes very little to confuse me.

It’s these phone spell things - I am hopeless on a phone - I type one thing and it puts a completely different word! The most usual one I find is the word else and it outs rude instead! And I also mahe plenty of typos with the small keypad as well. I prefer my laptop for typing.
But anyway - yes Kage will be able to smell and sense you even through deep bedding - their sense of smell and hearing is keen - if he is awake! If he’s asleep they can take some rousing!

I very rarely text on a phone. I get in enough of a fix typing on a laptop
As for Kage, as much as I'd love to get close to him, if he has other ideas, who am I to argue? I'd lose anyway. I can only do what I am able to do, and I still refuse to dig him out and force him out.
I stand by what I have said before - he's entitled to a stress-free life and as long as he's contented, and I do so hope he is, I'll leave him alone - but always, always hope he'll come round and meet me half way. He will still be loved and cared for, as elusive as he may be.

Some time in the playpen usually encourages hamsters to come out. Perhaps try being less quiet, it might catch Kage's attention. I wonder if he would come out to say hello ❤

And if I can fool Admin, well...! However, I can tease, but I cannot lie - it is an AI image, and it actually came out better than I was expecting. It's Kage to a T 
You can rest assured, any AI images I create will be posted in the usual forums and not in any competition.
As for him going into the playpen, I really need for him to trust me some more, and to be able to see him more. His royal carriage awaits - a large, clean coffee jar with 360 degrees viewing so he can see exactly what is happening at all times. As I have said, he's been coming out later each morning. For the last two nights I've left him alone at midnight, much earlier than usual. Of course I don't know whether he gets up any earlier, so maybe a camera is a good idea to keep track on him.
I've got a whole array of enrichments for his playpen just waiting, and if and when he goes into it, I can get the second extension fitted on his home to give him that much more room to burrow and explore other enrichments I have ready. So it will be a win-win situation all round.
I may give him one more night to himself tonight, then spend some more time other nights, looking, waiting, hoping to see him. From a personal point of view on the downside, these last few days, I've missed my afternoon nap, but on the upside, I've had a couple of very good night's sleep
