Higgins

Beautiful video's, he's such a lovely hammy, I'm sure once you saw him happily looking around it made all your hard work and all the pain so worthwhile 🥰 enjoy and have fun Higgins 💖💕💞🥰🐹 Ness

Thank you. Yes he still acts very young.

Yes it did 😊. But what a load of effort just to change over a wheel! The partial clean wasn’t that bad to do but dismantling everything to replace the part of the cage the wheel was attached to ….

I bought Socks an Omlet cage because it solved our wheel problems 🥰
I seriously thought about that! But I think he’s too old to move to a different cage - he’s quite settled. Also the Omlet wheel isn’t quite big enough for him - he’s very long … it would be big enough for the average length hamster 😊

Maybe put some lavender near his cage…moths don’t like the scent.
I’ve just bought two types of moth traps - carpet moths and pantry moths. Did that last time and should have thought of it before. This lone moth is the one that escaped from the moth infested cage two weeks ago I am sure - and it seems to want to go in Higgins cage. I just hope it isn’t a female moth! Ie one that can lay eggs.

A sticky fly strip (the type that hand from the ceiling) worked quite well last time as well.

Three short nightcam video clips of Higgins. The first one he is carefully carrying his peanut and papaya cookie across the cage from his house, and stashes it in his Bucatstate hide :-) It made me smile.

The second one from last night, he's enjoying his sputnik. He actually spent ages in there but I cropped the video clip - washing, snacking and looking out.

The third one he is using his new wheel - he still seems to run quite slowly and carefully. I am wondering if that's because his old Trixie wheel didn't spin as well so he's used to running a bit slower maybe. He actually only used the wheel for a couple of short periods throughout the night - he spent most of his time foraging and grooming and doing other hamstery things. Again I'm wondering if he just isn't a massive wheeler - his trixie wheel was regularly stuffed up with bedding and had to keep being free'd up.

Maybe go full screen to see the cookie :-)

Before he got in the sputnik he spent ages on the shelf next to it grooming - he really likes that shelf. It is actually two deep ledges together to make one shelf, with hemp mat glued on so it gives a firm footing. The ledges butt up to his Bucatstate hide and he sometimes puts food on the top of the hide - an extra stash for snacking from. The two ledges give level access to the sputnik and are over his main shelf.

I did consider putting all perspex in the cage at one point, but then it would have meant a completely new set up and spoiling his routines and familiarity, without his sputnik and hemp mat shelves. And wouldn't have been able to screw the wheel to the back so that would have taken up more space.

It always amazes me how hamsters seem to like to sit on a shelf to groom. You would think they would feel exposed as they like being under things usually. Raffy was the same. Loved sitting on his shelf grooming.

He did have a big stretch at one point so seems quite contented.

Oh how sweet 😍 carrying that biscuit 🍪😅
I didn’t think he is running too slow, probably just cautious because it’s new? But he looks fine and very happy 🫶

It's the little spring at the end :-) Majestically carrying it high across the cage and negotiating the route and then a last little fast spring into the Bucatstate hide.

Yes that was so cute 🥰 how carefully he carried it too 😅

Higgins is really loving his silent runner wheel and using it a lot more now and running faster :-)

Here he is spinning it from the outside again :ROFLMAO:

He’s really loving that wheel. 😍🌺

I know he was very cautious at first but loving it now. I feel mean now and wish I had given him a better wheel in the first place! The trixie wheel had always been perfectly fine in the playpen but didn't work so well in the cage due to not being attached as well and it getting stuffed up with bedding too easily.

When Higgins came the trixie wheel was going to be temporary. Then I was going to change it for a rodipet wheel I have, but in trying to attach that, it snapped one of the bars (old cage) so put perspex over it and put the trixie wheel back. Then lost the washer for the rodipet wheel! The silent runner was in Tino's cage but was taken out a while back as he wasn't using a wheel any more, so had become a spare a while back. Then I found the washer for the rodipet wheel but decided to use the silent runner this time as Higgy was used to an enclosed wheel.

These new silent wheels are very good. But they are heavily overpriced 🫣 I ordered a trixie wooden wheel at first, I had to send it back though cause it wobbled awfully.
I didn’t know about the silent wheels at first and didn’t really believe they are much better, but i would always get one again 😍
I bet Higgins loves it, but the other wheels are fine too. Just like you wrote: the silent ones are like Rolls Royce 😍

The silent runners aren't too expensive. It's just they are almost impossible to get hold of now. I've had this one for quite a while.

I didn’t realise it’s a brand name 🫣 I was referring to the niteangel Bucatstate and others 😅

No it's this one :-) It was one of the first 12" silent wheels. It was very popular for a while then the niteangel wheels came along. The last one I bought from this place (the main stockist) was very bad and didn't fit together properly - not sure if quality control is worse or I just had a bad one. But I already had a good one.
